About Newark

NJIT is located in the vibrant University Heights district of downtown Newark, just 20 minutes from New York City by train. Newark is a diverse city filled with restaurants, shops, galleries and more than 30,000 college students. Getting around town is easy as Newark is a transportation hub with Newark Penn Station 10 minutes from campus, as well as Newark Liberty International Airport less than 15 minutes away. NJIT also includes public service and economic development as key components of its mission and provides nearly 70,000 hours of community service each year. Enrollment at NJIT

The bold initiatives of 2020 Vision have transformed the nature of NJIT’s student population. Growth in applications has more than doubled, from approximately 4500 first-year applications in 2014 to over 11,000 in 2021. Enrollment has also grown, with the cohort of first-time, full-time first-year students increasing from approximately 1000 in 2014 to 1429 in the fall of 2021. With stronger entering credentials, incoming students are better prepared for the academic rigors of NJIT. This, together with effective student support initiatives, has led to higher retention and graduation rates, comparable to America’s best public universities.

The Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Student Services provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction in the development and attainment of enrollment targets for NJIT through leadership of over 50 staff in the Offices of University Admissions, Student Financial Aid Services, Registrar, and Student Persistence & Reenrollment as follows:

The Office of University Admissions at NJIT is responsible for recruiting and admitting an outstanding and diverse student body from a national and international pool of candidates to its undergraduate and graduate programs in six colleges. Over 5,000 visitors are welcomed to campus a year through on-campus events and over 9,000 engage in virtual events. The admissions staff represent the institution as recruiters throughout the country and the world, introducing NJIT to prospective students, parents, high school personnel, and community-based organizations.

Making the high quality of an NJIT education as affordable as possible is a priority for NJIT. Close to 80% of undergraduate students, including 92% of first-time incoming first-year and transfer students, receive some form of financial aid. The Office of Student Financial Aid Services annually distributes over $100 million in financial assistance, and helps students develop a concrete plan for financing their NJIT degree, from estimating the cost of attending to helping students and families understand eligibility requirements for different types of aid and how to apply for them.

The Office of the University Registrar is the steward of NJIT’s records, maintaining their integrity and accurately recording the academic progress of each student, within the rules and policies enacted by the faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees, in compliance with local, state, and Federal laws, and in accordance with accepted and established record-keeping practices. The Registrar is a vital link in enrollment strategy by ensuring that new and continuing students are able to enroll accurately and efficiently and maintain degree progress within and across academic programs. Working with the colleges’ leadership, the Office of the University Registrar schedules course offerings for each academic term and processes transfer of credits from other institutions.

The Office of Student Persistence & Reenrollment, established in 2019, is a powerful campus resource to help support the community–including students, faculty, and staff–so that students have an exemplary experience while completing their degrees. Its mission is to identify and assist in resolving key issues that may impede and/or impact the ability to complete one’s degree; the successful transfer of credits and/or cross-registration process; financial aid processes and packages; and identifying the proper people and offices to help with an issue. This office also reaches out to students who have left the university because of financial and/or academic reasons and offers advice on problem resolutions that can lead to reenrollment.

The Opportunity

The Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Student Services (VPEMSS) is a leadership position charged with overseeing a dynamic operation in an increasingly complex environment. The position requires a keen understanding of the higher education competitive setting, understanding of new student markets, developing innovative domestic and international recruitment strategies, setting strategic objectives, intensifying the use of technology, and optimizing the overall recruitment and enrollment process. Of paramount importance is the ability to recruit and retain a highly diverse student body.

Along with the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs & Student Services, the VPEMSS directs efforts designed to identify immediate and long-range goals; leads the development and implementation of enrollment strategic plans that are vigorous, creative, data-informed, and student-centered; communicates and aligns the enrollment goals, as needed, with other University units with specific responsibilities to develop relations with the Deans to identify their enrollment goals; and works closely with The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies and the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies, among others.

As a leader committed to the values of equity and inclusion, the VPEMSS will establish the enrollment division as a customer-focused, collaborative environment and will design and implement a structure to increase coordination and cooperation among the units supervised so as to best serve students and help ensure student success among all populations at the University, better envision and manage enrollment goals, and increase efficiencies and synergies across these units. Working collaboratively within the division and with university partners, the VPEMSS will provide active oversight of strategies most critical to achieve enrollment goals and budgeted net tuition revenues and will secure resources necessary for the team to achieve its objectives.

Specifically, the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Student Services:

  • Provides strategic, visionary, and overarching leadership to the enrollment planning, policy implementation, and operational management of the University’s enrollment services enterprise.
  • Leads the offices of admissions, student financial aid, student persistence and re-enrollment, and the university registrar.
  • Leads student recruitment efforts and oversees marketing functions designed to effectively communicate the value of an NJIT education to diverse populations utilizing appropriate marketing channels.
  • Provides strategic advice to recruiting special student cohorts such as honors and EOP.
  • Leads the development of strategic partnerships with domestic and foreign institutions for the recruitment of students.
  • Leads data collection and its use in developing student recruitment strategies.
  • Develops and leads the team charged with working across the University to envision and deliver the optimal and sustainable enrollment plan for NJIT and meeting its short- and long-term goals.
  • Collaborates with the directors and managers in establishing specific department, unit, or program goals; assumes accountability for achieving objectives; and monitors progress toward completion of goals of the departments they supervise.
  • Formulates, develops, interprets, and assists in the administration of University policies and procedures; ensures compliance with accreditation, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the functions of the university they oversee; represents the University to parents, alumni, student/employee organizations, businesses, etc.; and performs related duties on behalf of the University as directed by the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs & Student Services.
  • Leads and oversees the development of agreements with community colleges, other domestic institutions and foreign universities for creating student pipelines of prospective undergraduate and graduate students; ensures that all agreements are timely updated.
  • Works with the leadership of the offices of student financial aid and admissions in overseeing the development of criteria for awarding both merit- and need-based university scholarships.
  • Oversees the generation of user-friendly reports sent to colleges and departments to facilitate their efforts in yielding admitted students and ensures coordination of yield efforts between the Office of University Admissions and the academic units.
  • Advocates and seeks the implementation of automation processes in all areas they oversee to ensure delivering a high level of student services, and the collection of data to inform future decisions.
Candidate Profile

The Vice Provost for Enrollment Management & Student Services at NJIT will be a data-informed, confident, and focused leader deeply invested in the mission of NJIT and its promise for opportunity. The selected candidate will have a deep understanding of enrollment management strategies and processes; a broad vision of the complex issues facing higher education enrollment now and in the future; and a demonstrated record of successfully meeting undergraduate and graduate enrollment goals.

Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and will have an ability to spark enthusiasm and work harmoniously with other academic leaders and staff members.

In addition, strong candidates will offer:

  • A master’s degree plus at least ten years of experience in leading a successful enrollment management program; Doctoral degree preferred.
  • At least eight years of experience supervising admissions, student financial aid, and/or registrar functions; experience managing in a collective bargaining environment would be an asset.
  • Expert knowledge of a broad range of strategic, technological, and operational methodologies, tools, and practices governing undergraduate and graduate admissions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic services that promote student retention and persistence.
  • An ability to lead targeted outreach and marketing strategies appropriately for distinctive programs, schools, and students.
  • Experience in leading successful enrollment management programs in a research university.
  • Familiarity with the literature on regional and national student enrollment trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to form partnerships.
