Summary:

GreatSchools is a national nonprofit that improves education outcomes by inspiring parents to recognize, support, and demand excellence in their children and schools. Over the past 17 years, GreatSchools has emerged as the nation’s leading source of preK-12 school and education information for parents. GreatKids is our evolving program that inspires parents to set high expectations for their children’s education and engage with their children and teachers in ways that lead to improved student outcomes. We focus on two aspects of parenting that are critical for success: academic achievement and social emotional learning, including character development. Working with research partners, we are developing GreatKids along two parallel paths: 1) applying fast-cycle research to discover and improve high-impact, targeted interventions; and 2) creating digital media content that informs and engages a broad base of American parents, including low-income and Spanish-dominant parents.

Last year the program served several million parents via the GreatKids channel on GreatSchools.org. By the end of 2017, we aim to increase our engagement with millions of parents of children in preschool through high school with content and tools distributed directly to parents nationally, as well as, potentially, through teacher, school, district, city, and state partners.

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will lead the program within a matrix organization. The position offers a unique opportunity to take a successful, but still nascent program, and develop it into a nationally significant force for K-12 education improvement. The Vice President, GreatKids Program will drive program strategy, conceptualize and develop sustaining revenue streams, develop strategic partnerships, and ensure overall program quality. Reporting to the COO and working closely with the Founder and CEO, s/he will be expected to bring his or her own vision, strategic insight, and entrepreneurial energy to the effort.

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will possess the following attributes and competencies:

Passion for the Mission

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will demonstrate passion for the mission of GreatSchools and a strong belief in the importance of placing information in the hands of parents as a means to improving outcomes for children. S/he will bring content experience in the education/parent engagement space, demonstrate an understanding of the players in the field and be a passionate advocate for the potential impact of the GreatKids program.

Strategic Leadership and Management

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will be an effective strategist and disciplined leader who, working closely with staff outside of his or her reporting chain, will conceptualize and oversee execution of programming for GreatKids. Working with internal and external stakeholders, s/he will put together a strategic approach to increasing impact and financial sustainability that focuses the organization on how best to achieve desired outcomes. S/he will ultimately build and retain a small team that will work with him/her to implement the course of action for achieving the vision, while relying on staff in other departments, including, design, editorial, finance, marketing, partnerships, product, research, software engineering, and talent.

Partnership Development

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will work in a collaborative manner, building relationships and promoting GreatKids throughout the nation. S/he will actively and strategically seek partnerships and build coalitions with research organizations, community partners, schools districts, cities and states to advance program strategy.

Resource Development

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will lead the effort to grow mission-aligned revenue. Working in collaboration with leadership and staff, s/he will identify and test potential new earned revenue streams, as well as grow our existing sponsorship stream. In addition, s/he will play a key role garnering philanthropic support to advance program R&D.

The Vice President, GreatKids Program will think creatively about how to achieve goals through a balance of proven and novel approaches. S/he will be a thoughtful risk-taker, always looking for new opportunities and win/win partnerships. With a focus on outcomes and impact, s/he will creatively and strategically envision the future and then move the program in that direction.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for and commitment to the mission of GreatSchools
  • 5+ years of senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or business environment
  • Strong strategic leadership skills demonstrating vision and an entrepreneurial spirit, along with demonstrated experience producing excellent outcomes
  • Experience within a matrix organization directing and influencing colleagues to desired outcomes; keen ability to manage up, down, and across effectively
  • Entrepreneurial experience in program and product development and getting services and capabilities to market
  • Highly strategic mindset, including the demonstrated ability to develop and execute plans for growth and goal attainment
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and securing resources necessary to support programming, especially including earned revenue streams
  • Highly developed relationship-building skills and an ability to positively represent the organization to a variety of both internal and external stakeholders
  • Process orientation with an ability to create structure while still leaving room for creativity and flexibility
  • Strong affinity for technology and a deep respect for the value and power of data in decision-making
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, a comfort level with public speaking and an ability to inspire audiences around a common mission
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience required; Master’s preferred

Compensation and Benefits:
