Role Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ) is accountable for the administrative, financial, legal, and risk management operations of the organization, including the development of a financial and operational strategy, metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve organization assets and report accurate financial results.

As the financial leader of the organization, the CFO will serve as a valued member of the executive management team. The CFO will directly influence and participate in the day-to-day operations, budgets and long-range planning for the organization. The CFO will have overarching responsibility for accounting, internal and grant-related financial reporting and legal compliance-, short- and long-term financial planning, budgeting, audit, forecasting and analysis, tax and treasury operations.

The CFO serves in an advisory capacity to the CEO and Board of Directors serving as a valued sounding board and partner and providing strategic leadership where needed. Working in tandem with the other executives, the CFO collaboratively develops and implements the organization’s short-term and long-term financial operating model. The CFO provides organizational and functional leadership and direction with regard to all finance related activities, guided by a commitment to providing timely, accurate and high-quality information and service. The CFO will be a critical thought partner to the organization’s program, marketing, technology, talent management, and fundraising functions.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Partner with the president on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide recommendations to the president based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Engage the vice presidents of Resource Development and Community Impact to match revenue with mission-oriented projects.
  • Engage the Finance and HR committees around issues, trends, best practices to enhance employee engagement and workplace tools.

Planning

  • Develop and evaluate short and long-term strategic financial objectives for the organization, ensuring always that they are aligned with overall strategy and mission.
  • Partner with members of the executive team to establish economic, financial and strategic objectives, to implement organizational strategy, and to oversee mission critical projects and initiatives.
  • Manage the budget and financial forecasts processes. Leads the budgeting and financial forecasting processes, as well as institutes and maintains other planning and control procedures.
  • Collaborate and provide leadership with community impact and fundraising staff in the development and pricing of community impact products that are responsive to donors’ needs and interests and that capture and reflect accurately both the programmatic and actual costs to create, manage, and oversee these programs.
  • Adept at evaluating ROI and key process indicators for various resource development practices, strategies and programs and provides leadership to prioritize efforts and deploy staff and financial resources.

Financial and Operational Management

  • Provide timely and accurate analyses and financial reporting in order to ensure the highest level of financial oversight by executives and board members.
  • Prepare budgets, and oversee the implementation of budgets, to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
  • Ensure that finance staff maintains financial ledgers and systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and monitor the use of all funds.
  • Adept at managing the financial complexity of both unrestricted and restricted (designated) revenue streams. Understands the need to work with companies, donors, and public sector environments that are highly designated in an effort to: maintain these relationships; engage those donors and workplaces; effectively capture costs related to these activities; and to measure progress in encouraging unrestricted support to the impact work.
  • Participate and direct the preparation and approval of all monthly, annual and ad hoc financial reporting materials for internal review and approval by the UWGG Board of Directors.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting.
  • Coordinate all audit activities.
  • Evaluate and oversee all HR benefits negotiations, thus providing the most competitive packages for UWGG employees.
  • Review all formal finance, HR, and IT related policies, procedures, and processes.  Make recommendations for improvements to the systems to drive greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Team Management

  • Develop and manage direct staff, to include Director of Finance, IT, AP and AR; as well as act as a supportive business partner to other groups.
  • Engage other members of the senior management team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all financial, IT, and HR solutions positively support UWGG’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.
