About United Against Poverty

United Against Poverty (UAP) envisions a community where every family has access to basic needs, nutritional food, crisis care, education and employment training, and where everyone has the opportunity to achieve a future filled with hope and possibilities. UAP strives to inspire and empower people living in poverty to lift themselves and their families to economic self-sufficiency.

Founded in 2003, UAP is the only national organization to provide families with both emergency food supplies and the opportunity to obtain highly subsidized groceries, including hygiene products, six days a week. Additionally, UAP’s Success Training for Employment Program (STEP) model is a holistic, multipronged approach that breaks the cycle of poverty.

UAP currently operates across three Florida campuses, including in Indian River County, St. Lucie County, and Orange County, with an annual operating budget of $12.5M and over 100 staff.

The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a business-minded, entrepreneurial, and creative chief executive to lead UAP’s strategic efforts as the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The CEO will report to and work collaboratively with the Board of Directors in leading the transformation of UAP from its current stage to a more mature organization, capable of delivering on its long-term national vision. Specifically, the CEO will ensure that UAP’s fiscal, operations, fundraising, marketing, HR, technology, and programmatic strategies are effectively implemented across all segments of the organization.

Given the organization’s success, UAP is poised for significant growth and expansion across Florida and nationally in the coming years. The Board is seeking a transformational leader to strategize toward this growth and support a dynamic and mission-driven staff across the three existing campuses.

Key Responsibilities

The CEO will be responsible for the following key areas:

Strategic Vision and Board Relations 

  • Collaborate with the Board to refine and implement the long-range strategic plan for growth, while ensuring that the budget, staff, and priorities are aligned with UAP’s core mission and that the Board is engaged with local campuses and national growth;
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board, serving as ex-officio of each committee;
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board, ensuring open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals

Leadership and Management  

  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, and communications; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals;
  • Actively engage and energize UAP volunteers, Board members, partnering organizations, and funders;
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain UAP’s high-performance senior management team; facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and strengthen internal communications with staff throughout the organization; create and promote a positive, multicultural work environment that supports consistency throughout the organization’s strategy, operational methods, and data collection needs;
  • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to stakeholders;
  • Manage planning for and execution of the annual budget;
  • Oversee the establishment of employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of UAP;
  • Ensure succession planning is in place for all senior staff, volunteer leadership, and the CEO

Fundraising and Communications

  • Serve as UAP’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations throughout the state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance UAP’s mission, garnering new opportunities and relationships as appropriate;
  • Report to and work closely with the Board to seek out their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of UAP throughout Florida and new areas of growth;
  • In partnership with the leadership team, expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and regional expansion;
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications, from web presence to external relations, with the goal of creating a stronger brand

Planning and New Business 

  • Refine and finalize the national strategic plan for program expansion into new markets;
  • Begin to build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with funders, political, and community leaders at each potential expansion site;
  • Act as an external local and national presence to communicate program results, with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional and national replication;
  • Oversee the flow of funds that permit UAP to make continuous progress toward the achievement of its mission, and ensure that those funds are allocated properly to reflect present needs and future potential
Candidate Profile

The CEO will be thoroughly committed to the UAP mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience.

The ideal candidate will have the following professional skills, qualities, and competencies:

  • Proven managerial, problem-solving, strategic planning, fund development, and financial management experience in the private, nonprofit, or public sectors;
  • Advanced degree, ideally an MBA, with at least 10 years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading and scaling a regional and/or national operation;
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation;
  • Excellence in organizational management; the ability to coach staff, manage, develop high-performing teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget;
  • Experience partnering with a Board, with the ability to cultivate existing Board member relationships;
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills;
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, with an innovative approach to business planning;
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people;
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
