The mission of Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Inc. is to empower, educate, and employ people to change lives and strengthen communities.

The agency was founded as a settlement house in 1919 by Ada Sophia McKinley, a schoolteacher and social reformer, who saw the need to assist veterans returning from World War I and African Americans migrating from the South.  Currently celebrating its 100th year anniversary, Ada S. McKinley is one of the largest human services organizations in the country with an annual operating budget of $40 million, nearly 600 employees, serving more than 7,000 people annually at over 70 locations.  Services are provided 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, primarily in Illinois/Chicago with additional sites in Indiana and Wisconsin.

Ada S. McKinley has three primary areas of service:  Child Development & Youth Services, Employment & Community Support, and Behavioral Health & Clinical Services. Services rendered daily include:

  • Tutoring, mentoring and college placement;
  • Family support and stabilization programming
  • Foster care;
  • Housing opportunities;
  • Youth and family counseling;
  • Employment training and placement; and
  • Head Start and Early Head Start programing.  ​

Ada currently serves 3,315 people through its Behavioral Health & Clinical program. The agency serves 2,602 people under the umbrella of Child Development & Youth (1,660 for Educational Services; 769 for Head Start & Early Learning; and 174 for Foster Care/Emergency Shelter).  It’s Employment & Community Support Services program serves 1,387 people.

The Opportunity

The Senior Vice President, Employment & Community Support Services (“SVP”) directs and provides oversight and management to the Employment and Community Support Services division. This leader is responsible for ensuring compliance with all funding source requirements, as well as ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures. The SVP also leads the development of budgets, fiscal planning and strategic planning for program sustainability and growth across multiple operating units.

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and oversees a team consisting of: Director of Residential Services, Area Director of Janitorial Services/ SEP Programs, Manager of Performance, Compliance and Quality Assurance, Center Directors, and the Production Superintendent.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing leadership in fostering an atmosphere of teamwork and coordination within all aspects of program services.
  • Planning, organizing, directing and controlling the activities of multiple operating units in accordance with agency’s policy, goals and objectives.
  • Developing operating unit budgets subject to agency approval and exercises close oversight over/control revenue generation and spending for the units under their management.
  • Implementing the agency performance management system for all staff under their jurisdiction and directing and managing personnel affairs in a manner consistent with agency policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing budgetary matters for all programs within the division.
  • Implementing quality improvement and program evaluation systems in accordance with agency requirements to ensure quality outcomes and conformance with the standards mandated by funding, licensing and accrediting bodies across operating units.
  • Preparing, or supervising the preparation of reports that are required by funding or accrediting agencies or are requested by Ada leadership.
  • Assessing and recommending the need for new programs and participating in the development of the funding applications essential to their acquisition and continuation.
  • Interpreting and promoting agency program and services to the community, the industry, funding and regulatory bodies.
  • Working collaboratively with all other agency management for the efficient and effective utilization of agency resources and the implementation of agency-wide priorities and plans.

This SVP serves on the Ada S. McKinley Strategic Operations Team and participates in all functions included in being a member of this team. The position ensures all program elements align with the organization’s mission and strategic plan strategies.

It is required the person in this position maintain strong interpersonal and communication skills, develops a strong team approach and leads from both a position of accountability and compassion.

A Strategic Leader with Strong Execution Skills

The SVP will have a proven record of converting strategy into effective execution. They will be a detail-oriented individual who functions well in a fast-paced environment. The SVP will have experience affecting change in an organization, strong organizational and process management skills and a strong ability to collaborate and create efficiencies across departments. They will be an assertive and results-oriented leader with the ability to translate Ada’s priorities and goals into clear objectives for the Leadership Team and staff. The SVP will be a builder with the ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability and allocate resources to ensure results.

Operations and Business Acumen

The SVP will be an intelligent self-starter and finisher who is resourceful and entrepreneurial, yet team oriented. A tactical executor, they will have a strong data and analysis orientation and a proven ability to use metrics to drive decisions and achieves strategic objectives. With the ability to engender trust, honesty and integrity, the SVP management style will be organized and efficient while at the same time inclusive, allowing for the building of consensus and recognition of teamwork. The SVP will also be an innovator, capable of initiating, sponsoring and implementing organizational change to improve service effectiveness, client outcomes and build strategic partnerships with other organizations while also helping others successfully manage such change.

Building Relationships and Earning Trust

The SVP must be able to build and sustain excellent relationships at multiple levels internally and with the various external constituencies including the Board of Directors, staff, community and a range of partner agencies and other institutions. They will have a high level of emotional intelligence with a demonstrated ability to quickly build trust and credibility with people. This leader brings a proven track record of developing and leading high-performing teams, drawing the best out of each individual to achieve goals, utilizing continuous improvement methods and metrics. The SVP will have a vision for the social services landscape and will understand the importance of effective operational and financial administration.
