In pursuing the ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness – one person at a time – the Siena/Francis House is Nebraska’s largest provider of services to the homeless in the region. This is an extraordinary period of revitalization for the Siena/Francis House. A beacon in the community, the Siena/Francis House collaborates and partners with other social service organizations in Omaha and beyond.

The mission of the Siena/Francis House is directed toward a concern and care of the poor. This mission is realized by welcoming, sheltering and empowering individuals experiencing homelessness to navigate their own path to stable housing.

This mission extends beyond merely answering physical needs to the acceptance and affirmation of the human person, the creation of an atmosphere of hospitality, and the provision of purpose and meaning in the lives of people who struggle for survival. It is also the mission of the Siena/Francis House to call the greater Omaha community to a social consciousness and to enlist help and support in the care of the homeless and the indigent.

The Siena/Francis House provides emergency overnight shelter, food to the homeless through the Meal Provider Program, clothing and case management outreach services through their day services program.

A ‘low barrier’ shelter, the Siena/Francis House is dedicated to providing all of its services to the poor and homeless with the respect and dignity they deserve, including those viewed as “most difficult to serve”— persons who are homeless, chronically addicted and have a mentally illness who may not currently be in treatment or taking medication. All of the organization’s services are provided at no cost to its guests.

To achieve the goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness, the Siena/Francis House encourages guests to consider a life of sobriety by entering into their residential addiction recovery program, the “Miracles” Treatment Center involving individual and group counseling sessions, as well as other life-skill educational opportunities.

The Siena/Francis House’s belief is that, by finding value and untapped abilities in people society has overlooked, they can help them find value in themselves. By providing persons in their “Miracles” Treatment Center and those in the shelter with counseling, education, job training, and life and independent living skills, they furnish them the tools that will help them recover from, and successfully manage the problems that brought them to the doors in the first place.

The Siena/Francis House also provides facility space for personnel from the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), Charles Drew Health Center, Creighton University Medical Center & Medical School, Community Alliance, and Legal Aid of Nebraska, all of whom provide medical and mental health care services and legal assistance to homeless guests.

The Opportunity:

As the Siena/Francis House (Siena/Francis) enters this exciting next chapter in its history, the Executive Director (ED) will provide leadership and direction to fulfill the organization’s mission. A clear vision and thoughtful strategic direction setting, developed collaboratively with the Siena/Francis’ House Board, area homeless service providers and the Omaha philanthropic community will be one of the major priorities for this ED.

Omaha is a city rich in civic engagement and history and one that is experiencing significant growth and development. With the goal of ending homelessness, the next Executive Director of Siena/Francis will have the opportunity to contribute mightily to the region by fortifying the organization’s role as a leader and essential partner.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will provide visionary leadership and oversee the management of the organization, focusing on Siena Francis’ mission and strategic goals. Additionally, the next ED will have the opportunity to partner with the Board and Omaha’s philanthropic community in a strategic planning update process to review current programming and outcomes and ensure optimal alignment with community needs and opportunities that have evolved and are emerging.

The ED is accountable for setting the direction of the organization, executing the strategic plan and establishing the overall fundraising strategy. The ED further manages the balance between risks and opportunities for Siena/Francis through the effective stewardship of resources. The role provides leadership and oversight of the organization’s operations, culture, values, talent and financial performance, and owns and protects the mission.

As the primary spokesperson for Siena/Francis, the ED engages donors and other constituents, partnering with the Director of Development on efforts to build the organization’s fundraising capacity. In addition, s/he will develop and foster positive relationships and linkages with key external stakeholders. The ED will maintain and communicate the vital connection between funders and program outcomes.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic and detailed-oriented leader who is able to effectively manage and empower people to achieve results. S/he must be an exceptional communicator and a continuous learner who has a demonstrated commitment and investment in teaching others. The ED will have a strong work ethic, a commitment to clear goals and measurable outcomes, an ability to learn quickly and work well in teams, and have a passion for the vision, mission, and strategies of Siena/Francis. The ED will need to have a presence on the Siena/Francis’ campus with clients and staff to instill the passion for the vision and mission throughout.

Key criteria for success of the ED include:

  • Championing a spirit of collaboration and open communications across all organizational departments and operations to advance organizational goals and engender trust among the staff;
  • Providing visionary leadership and developing strategic goals and objectives to ensure systemic alignment within the organization;
  • Promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality;
  • Monitoring internal operational processes and procedures and leading change management efforts where necessary to improve process efficiency and operational excellence;
  • Ensuring the organization remains true to mission. This includes attracting, retaining and mentoring staff that have a passionate commitment to the mission and core values;
  • Maintaining a focus on proactive, strategic planning that allows Siena/Francis to identify and take advantage of, or respond to, emerging trends and needs;
  • Cultivating relationships with key stakeholders, including Board Members, staff, clients and community partners;
  • Engaging and energizing Siena/Francis’ external stakeholders to garner new opportunities for generating revenue and community partnerships;
  • Partnering effectively with the Board and community to maximize their efforts and maintain a focus on Siena/Francis’s mission: and
  • Having a presence on campus to instill the mission of Siena/Francis to all staff and clients.

Candidate Profile:

The ED will be passionate about fulfilling Siena/Francis’ mission. S/he will have the character and confidence to work comfortably in a highly visible role and to interact effectively with a broad range of constituents.

The ED will be a strategic and entrepreneurial thinker who appreciates innovative and visionary business thinking within a nonprofit context, will see opportunity in every challenge and will maximize resources to bring about impact and change. S/he will offer creative, yet practical, ideas to grow Siena/Francis’ programs while staying focused on outcomes, cost effectiveness, the development of long-term partnerships, most importantly, alignment with mission. The ED will be a builder with the ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability and allocate resources to ensure results.

Building Relationships and Using Influence:

The ED must be able to build and sustain excellent relationships at multiple levels internally and with the various external constituencies. It is imperative that s/he is an excellent and persuasive communicator with exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills, and the ability to foster an atmosphere of collaboration and partnership. The ED will be a dynamic, energetic and credible leader, which will be conveyed both internally to the organization and externally to the broader community and can deal effectively with people of different philosophies, backgrounds and cultures. The ED will be a catalyst for change and growth inspiring others to think entrepreneurially and inject new ideas. S/he will help to build and retain a talented team.

An Action-Oriented Leader:

The ED is a seasoned executive with strong staff, operational and financial management experience. The ED possesses the ability to identify, hire, build and inspire a staff with a diverse set of skills, provide a productive work environment and professional growth opportunities that result in team cohesion and camaraderie. S/he is a facilitator of staff, community and Board collaboration. S/he will have the ability to provide clear expectations and accountability measures for staff deliverables while encouraging innovation and initiative. A tactical executor, s/he will have a strong data and analysis orientation and a proven ability to use metrics to drive decisions and achieves strategic objectives.

An ‘Ambassador’ for Siena/Francis:

The ED will he will have an executive and mission-driven presence and purpose and will be able to effectively articulate and convey Siena/Francis’ mission and priorities to a range of external and internal constituents, including the Board, community partners, clients and staff. The ED will believe deeply in building a robust network of collaboration and in forging long-lasting relationships throughout the city. As the external presence for Siena/Francis, the ED must be a confident and engaging public speaker who will inspire enthusiastic engagement and interest in the organization.

S/he will embrace the history and culture of Siena/Francis, which is integral to gaining credibility with the Board, staff, clients and community. S/he will have a vision for the social services landscape and will have an eye consistently focused on the future and how to best adapt Siena/Francis to its changing environment. A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
