About the Coalition:
ReflectUS is a nonpartisan coalition of eight leading women’s political organizations working together to increase the number of women elected to office and achieve gender parity across the ideological, racial, ethnic and geographic spectrum. These organizations (the Founders Circle)—Empowered Women, Higher Heights, IGNITE, LatinasRepresent, Representation 20/20, She Should Run, VoteRunLead and Women Influencers Network—are joining forces as a record number of women are poised to run for 520,000 elected offices across the country in 2018. ReflectUS is fiscally sponsored by Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
By combining the unique resources, experience and know-how of eight leading organizations, ReflectUS will help more women to run, win and serve, and create a pipeline of qualified, experienced female public officials. Taking a collaborative, data-driven approach to the gender disparity crisis, ReflectUS will open doors to the electoral system and expand public education outreach on the importance of having women in political leadership. In its first year, the coalition will focus on these key initiatives:
Pledge to ReflectUS: ReflectUS will challenge elected officials to publicly pledge to implement efforts to increase the representation of women over the short and long term. The pledge includes committing to hiring practices that mandate half of an office’s staff is female, policies that promote women’s access to political power, electoral systems reform, and mentoring programs to help advance opportunity for women in politics. ReflectUS will urge elected officials and party leaders at every level of government to take the pledge.
Move the Mainstream: The surge in women’s political participation and the growing #MeToo and #TimesUp movements represent a change in America’s culture toward equality and justice for all. ReflectUS will shape, push and influence our national narrative to create a more open and inclusive culture for women to run and lead. By using aggressive social media, engaging with traditional press and elevating the voices and ideas of women—and the men who support gender parity—the coalition will help move our country toward a more reflective democracy.
Interactive Visual Map: There are more than 520,000 elected offices across the country, with the majority at the local level. First-time candidates must be able to evaluate what seats are available, whether they are open, when elections are held, whether they are partisan, and what skills and qualifications are required to launch a successful candidacy. Through an interactive visual map, candidates will be able to search at the individual level and pull publicly available data to apply a gender lens on available seats, study parameters around those seats and obtain resources in each community to help guide potential candidacies.
Pilot Site Program Development: To achieve gender parity across the nation, we must first build a model that works locally (and in different locales) to increase the number of women
who run, win and serve. The Coalition has committed to investing time, energy and resources to achieve parity in five key locations: Dallas County, TX; Franklin County, OH; Salt Lake County, UT; Jefferson County, CO and Prince George’s County, MD. Across these counties, ReflectUS will intervene in elections to increase women’s representation from the local level up.
This is an extraordinary moment in American history when women are stepping forward in record numbers to shake up and engage in the political process. At present, women make up less than 19.8 percent of Congress, 25.3 percent of state legislature officials and 21 percent of locally elected positions. But beyond the statistics, women across the country are demanding equality and respect at every level of society—from the workplace to the halls of Congress. The time is now to achieve a system that reflects all of us.
This is an exceptional opportunity for the right mission-driven leader to provide strategic leadership for a nonpartisan Coalition dedicated to fast-tracking gender equality in American politics.
