About the MacArthur Justice Center:

Over the past 30 years, the Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center (RSMJC) has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s premier civil rights law firms. RSMJC is a litigation shop. It has engaged in cutting edge litigation to combat police abuses, to win compensation for the wrongly convicted, to improve the treatment of those confined in prisons and jails, to prevent over-incarceration, to oppose wealth discrimination, and, in the past year, to resist the encroachments of the Trump Administration on the rights of immigrants and the victims of police abuse. The family of J. Roderick MacArthur founded the center in 1985 to advocate for human rights and social justice on behalf of the vulnerable and oppressed in the criminal system. The late Dr. Solange MacArthur, one of Roderick’s three children, provided the center with an endowment that will ensure its capacity to fight injustice is enduring. John R. (“Rick”) MacArthur, President and Publisher of Harper’s Magazine, is Roderick’s last surviving child and remains actively engaged in the Center’s strategic direction as the lead board member.

In addition to St. Louis, RSMJC has offices in Chicago, New Orleans, Oxford, Mississippi and Washington, DC. RSMJC’s St. Louis office was opened in 2016 and has already established a track record of engagement in high impact civil rights litigation on both sides of the Mississippi River. Among other things, the St. Louis office is currently litigating an important challenge to Missouri’s failure to provide minimal due process protections to those accused of violating parole; the office has an important class action seeking adequate medical treatment for prisoners with Hepatitis C; and the office has a docket of individual police abuse cases that raise important issues about the limits of police authority. RSMJC is already recognized as a powerful force for change in the Missouri criminal justice system.

The Opportunity:

RSMJC is looking for an accomplished civil rights litigator to lead the St. Louis office.

The Director will manage an active docket of civil rights cases and lead RSMJC’s selection of cases for the St. Louis team. S/he will supervise the attorneys and staff in the office and first chair litigation of complex civil rights cases.

As the main representative for RSMJC in St. Louis, the Director will lead all interactions with the media, peer organizations and the public regarding the work of the office. S/he will ensure RSMJC stays at the cutting edge of the industry and continues to prove itself as an integral part of the Missouri criminal justice system.

The Director will represent the St. Louis office to the larger RSMJC team and work with leadership on strategic goals and objectives.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will have the following personal and professional competencies and characteristics:

A Proven Civil Rights Litigator

With at least ten years of experience conducting civil litigation, the Director will have the proven ability to handle first chair responsibilities in complex civil rights matters. S/he will have a dedicated commitment to the most vulnerable populations and the values of RSMJC. This experienced lawyer will have the expertise to carefully curate the St. Louis docket and will be comfortable turning away potential cases that are not aligned with RSMJC’s mission and values. S/he will be able to mentor and supervise other lawyers and legal staff and guide them through complex litigation matters. The Director will be looked to as a leader in the field in St. Louis and beyond.

A Strong Leader

The Director will be a strategic, yet hands-on leader. S/he will have a successful track record in staff management and development. The Director will be a proven leader while simultaneously maintaining a docket of active cases. S/he will take great pride in leading the team and will be committed to mentoring and developing the strong staff. S/he will lead by example. The Director’s strong work ethic will be balanced with good humor and an interest in cultivating an energized, happy and caring workplace.

An ‘Ambassador’ for RSMJC

The Director will be a high-energy, charismatic leader who will serve as an ‘Ambassador’ for RSMJC in St. Louis and beyond. S/he will have an executive and mission-driven presence and will be able to effectively articulate and convey RSMJC’s mission and priorities to a range of constituents. S/he will be able to work effectively with diverse populations and will be credible in the legal and social justice communities. As the external voice of the organization, s/he will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and must be a confident public speaker.
