About Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity:

Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE) is a 10-year, $60 million program designed to support dynamic change-makers dedicated to dismantling anti-black racism in the U.S. and South Africa, two nations with deep and enduring legacies of racial exclusion and discrimination. The program will engage up to 350 racial equity leaders over its 10-year life, annually supporting up to 35 fellows per year—25 from the U.S. and 10 in South Africa. Fellows will be grassroots and civil rights advocates and scholars from diverse disciplines, as well as individuals working in government, the media, arts, and elsewhere. AFRE seeks to build on significant and growing movements for equality and inclusion in South Africa and the U.S. and to offer fresh thinking and strategies so that much more can be achieved. Through AFRE, leaders of these movements will have opportunities to deepen their understanding of the roots of injustice and prejudice and to develop tools for creating more equitable and responsive institutions; more expansive and truthful cultural narratives; and more empathic and inclusive policies, practices, and societies.

The Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity is part of the global network of leadership programs – the Atlantic Fellows – designed to empower and connect dynamic individuals who are committed to working together across disciplines and borders to address some of the world’s most critical challenges. These programs are supported by the Atlantic Institute, a global leadership institute that fosters exchange, networking, and collaboration among Atlantic Fellows.

Hosted by Columbia University, AFRE was conceived, designed, and created in partnership with five leading organizations in the U.S. and South Africa: BOLD, Center for Community Change, Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society at UC-Berkeley, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Kavitha Mediratta, Chief Strategy Advisor at The Atlantic Philanthropies, will step down from her current position on December 31st to assume her new role as Executive Director of the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity. Alondra Nelson, Dean of Social Science and Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, will be the lead faculty partner to the program.

The Opportunity – Program Director:

AFRE is seeking a Program Director to oversee program and curriculum development and delivery. The position will report to the Executive Director and will be based in New York City. Substantial domestic and international travel will be required.

The primary functions of the Program Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring overall program alignment with the organizational mission, vision, and theory, and developing and providing high-level reports and analysis on program performance to the Executive Director and Governing Board
  • Liaising with Program Committee staff to plan and execute the Fellows program, ensuring that program elements are cohesive with each other and that the U.S. and South Africa-based components are well-integrated
  • Leading curriculum development and ensuring that curriculum meets a high standard and advances AFRE’s core mission and vision
  • Guiding and co-facilitating learning sessions for Fellows in collaboration with program partners
  • Identifying new potential partners to augment the program experience and managing relationships with stakeholders
  • Developing and overseeing an alumni network-building strategy
  • Supporting effective evaluation and learning for improvement
  • Sharing in representing the organization to other programs in the field, including the Atlantic Fellows programs and the Atlantic Institute

Candidate Profile:

The Program Director should have the following experience and qualifications:

  • At least seven years of experience in program and curriculum development
  • Strong grounding in social change theory and experience in translating theory into day-to-day practice
  • Knowledge of the social justice landscape and experience developing strategy to navigate it
  • Strong facilitation skills in adult training programs
  • Ability to inspire and organize a team of people to achieve a common set of goals
  • Experience and skill as a manager and organizational leader, including direct supervision, staff development, and planning for organizational performance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience with public speaking
  • Ability to work well in a consensus-driven team environment
  • Familiarity discussing and facilitating conversations around sensitive topics, including race, class, privilege, and other related issues
  • High level of emotional maturity; strong skills in moving problems, disagreements, and conflicts to positive outcomes
  • Commitment to transforming the scale, impact, and quality of efforts to advance racial and social equity
