About Philanthropy New York
Philanthropy New York (PNY) is a trusted community of 280+ grantmaking organizations in the greater New York City region that develops forward-thinking guidance and programming to address the unique challenges of philanthropy and convenes funders to strengthen ties across the sector. PNY brings together funders from within and across sectors to form networks, develop and share knowledge, and nurture crucial skills to make the work of each grantmaker – and the sector as a whole – more meaningful and more effective.
Since its founding in 1979, Philanthropy NY has enabled it members to:
- Convene and collaborate as a community – PNY brings together philanthropic professionals to share across issues and across professional roles. Practitioners build collaborative efforts, share practices, and learn from peers.
- Share knowledge, skills, and transformative practices – PNY designs robust programming and professional and leadership development that equips members to understand and adapt to shifting norms and emerging trends in the field. PNY programs help members cultivate key skills and implement practice models that fit their unique needs.
- Amplify the voice of the philanthropic field – PNY amplifies members’ knowledge, experience, and perspective about the social sector to inform, influence, and strengthen public policy.
With a diverse staff of 15 dedicated professionals, PNY has committed internally and externally to strengthening its approach to racial equity in recent years. Acknowledging that institutional philanthropy stems from systems rooted in inequity, the PNY Board and staff have been in an ongoing process of deepening their individual and group learning about racial equity. This work extends to the members through compelling programming designed with equity at the core.
The PNY operating budget is roughly $3.2M and the organization relies on membership dues as the core revenue source. Key grants provide an additional source of financial support to allow PNY to continue its important work. Twenty-two leaders across New York City’s philanthropic community serve on an active and engaged Board of Directors. PNY is housed in the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice in Midtown Manhattan. This transition comes after 12 years of leadership by Ronna Brown, under which PNY has become one of the most influential and highly respected regional grantmaking associations in the country.

Philanthropy New York is looking for an exceptional President to lead the organization to achieve even greater levels of service to the philanthropic community. This is an opportunity for a visionary leader to build upon PNY’s values and long-standing track record of excellence to lead the organization and its membership into the future. Given the current moment’s attention and scrutiny on the field of philanthropy as a prime lever, the next chapter for PNY can be expected to bring unique opportunities for advocacy, innovation, and collaboration. The incoming President will work closely with the Board of Directors and lead a highly skilled team to balance the organization’s long-term strategy and day-to-day operations.
The President’s specific responsibilities include:
- Network Leadership
- Continue the key work of maintaining the core PNY network by building meaningful and authentic relationships with members in order to remain informed about, and responsive to, the diverse and changing interests of current and future members
- Align members around key issues in the philanthropy space for advocacy, shared learning, and collaborative action
- Maintain, cultivate, and leverage relationships with key decision-makers in the philanthropic community with diplomacy, tact, and skill
- Apply expertise in the fields of philanthropy, nonprofit organizations, and public policy aligned to these areas to benefit PNY members through compelling programs, informed strategy, and valuable advice
- Implement a comprehensive strategy to engage and steward current members, while creatively and enthusiastically cultivating new members
- Staff Development and Management
- Build and retain a talented and inclusive team that embraces a culture of member service, humility, collaboration, and shared learning
- Commit to professional development and mentoring of staff, with focus on creating leadership opportunity at all levels and ensuring equity among staff
- Oversee strategic planning and annual goal setting to ensure the growth and support of the mission
- Board Partnership
- Collaborate with Board Members to establish vision and strategy for PNY, building on inputs from staff and members
- Support Board engagement through partnership and preparation for all Board Members
- Provide ongoing and thorough updates to the Board on PNY’s areas of success and areas needing support
- Financial Stewardship
- Ensure ongoing revenue through member dues and donations, based on positive and ongoing partnerships with members and funders
- Partner with staff to monitor budget and plan accordingly
- Develop and manage long-term sustainable revenue streams and business models to sufficiently support programs, activities, operations, and new initiatives, including grants, capital campaigns, investment revenue, or other measures
- Advocacy and Representation
- Serve as an ambassador on behalf of PNY, ensuring engagement with a wide stakeholder group, including funders, media, policy makers, the public, and other philanthropy serving organizations
- Develop and carry out an advocacy agenda related to the philanthropic sector that incorporates the needs and interests of members
- Effectively communicate the vision, goals, and plans to Board members, staff, members, and other constituents
The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:
- Extensive and high-level experience in the nonprofit sector, with particular experience in the field of philanthropy; Ability to analyze sector trends, needs, and challenges at all levels – city, state, national, and international
- Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills, with a true love for relationship-building and networking
- Demonstrated skill in thinking strategically and creatively, with experience engaging and unifying a diverse set of stakeholders and applying an entrepreneurial lens; Approach that combines humility with decisive leadership
- Ability to bring diverse groups of people together towards common purpose and to create and engage in collaborative partnerships
- Capacity to create and lead public policy initiatives that respond to the membership needs, in partnership with staff
- Knowledge and experience in racial equity principles and practices, with experience in organizational implementation
- Track record of staff management that ensures that everyone reaches their full potential
- Experience supporting and partnering with a Board of Directors
- Ability to balance complex needs and strategy while also ensuring effective management of day-to-day details
- Understanding of the unique landscape of the New York City philanthropic and nonprofit sectors
Compensation & Benefits
Philanthropy New York offers a competitive salary with a range between $230,000 and $260,000 and an excellent benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contribution, vacation, and sick leave.
