About Imerman Angels:
Imerman Angels was created on the belief that no one should have to face cancer alone and without the necessary support. Imerman Angels provides free, personalized, one-on-one cancer support to cancer fighters, survivors and their caregivers.
Through its unique matching process, Imerman Angels partners anyone, any age, any gender, anywhere and any cancer type seeking support with someone just like them – a “Mentor Angel.” A Mentor Angel is a cancer survivor or caregiver who – most importantly – has faced the same type of cancer.
With the knowledge that cancer is one of the world’s great equalizers, the organization’s service is absolutely free and helps anyone touched by any type of cancer, living anywhere in the world. Imerman Angels is making an impact in over 90 countries around the world and in all 50 states. The organization has nearly 40,000 connections to date and the World’s largest network of cancer survivors with over 9,000 Mentor Angels.
These one-on-one relationships give a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and get support from someone who has been there before. Mentor Angels can lend support and empathy and help cancer fighters and caregivers navigate the system, determine their options and create their own support systems. Frequently, caregivers experience feelings similar to those of the person facing cancer. Mentor Angels can relate while being sensitive to the experience and situation.
For over 10 years, Imerman Angels has been connecting volunteers that are cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. At 26 years old, Jonny Imerman was diagnosed with testicular cancer and began his fight against the disease. Throughout his experience, Jonny was lucky enough to have loving support from his family and friends but had never met anyone his age who was a cancer survivor. He wanted to talk to someone just like him, someone who truly understood, and was intimately familiar with his experience. In short, he was looking for someone who had already faced the same type of cancer. This was the beginning of Jonny’s vision and in 2003, it became a reality when he founded Imerman Angels.
Since its inception, Imerman Angels has consistently received press coverage and recognition as a thought leader from major media outlets including CNN, TEDx, The Huffington Post, among many others. Respected nationally by corporate and medical leaders, the organization has a contagious and inspired spirit dedicated to the fact that no one should face cancer alone. In June 2017, Imerman Angels was one of 3 organizations to win WeWork’s Detroit Creator Awards in the Scale category, taking home $180,000 in the competition out of a pool of roughly 600 organizations.
In 2017, the Imerman Angels team had its most successful year to date, ending the year with over 3,000 matches. Under the leadership of the Board of Directors and an inspired staff, the organization has plans for ambitious growth. In the next 3 years, the organization is looking to increase their $1.8 million budget to $3 million, which will yield 10,000 matches annually. Imerman Angels believes in excellence, never settling for being ‘good enough’ and always innovating and improving. As Imerman Angels enters this exciting chapter in its history, the Executive Director (ED) will provide leadership and direction to fulfill the organization’s mission. Inspired by a genuine passion that no one should face cancer alone, the ED will have a clear vision for the organization. Developed collaboratively with the Board, strategic planning and implementation will be one of the major priorities for this ED. The ED will focus on fundraising, operational efficiency and raising Imerman Angels’ profile nationally.
Reporting to and partnering with the Board of Directors, the ED will be expected to provide strategic leadership to the organization. The ED will work proactively with the Board and development team to fundraise for Imerman Angels and strategically lead the organization into its next chapter which will inspire engagement and enrollment among donors, partners and potential Mentor Angels. Internally, s/he will ensure the staff is working effectively, empowering them and leading by example. Currently consisting of nine high-energy, highly motivated professionals, the ED will provide leadership development for the team. The ED will work tirelessly to promote and expand the efforts of the organization both internally and externally.
The ED will be able to credibly represent the organization in cancer support community, grasping core concepts, trends and social impact, increasing the organization’s positioning as subject matter experts.

Key responsibilities include:
- Embodying a clear, inspiring, entrepreneurial vision and guiding the team to translate those strategies into effectively executed plans
- Achieving revenue goals and strong fundraising success for Imerman Angels by increasing major donors, partners, and key stakeholders with a specific goal of growing revenue from $1.8M to $3M;
- Developing and executing a 3-year strategic plan to accomplish the aforementioned growth goals for the organization’
- Championing a spirit of innovation, collaboration and open communications internally to advance organizational goals and engender trust among the staff;
- Instilling a culture of high performance and leadership at all levels by serving as a coach and mentor;
- Partnering and providing professional leadership to the Board of Directors to assure development of an effective and motivated Board, including identification, recruitment and stewardship; and
- Representing Imerman Angels to the philanthropic and civic communities and acting as an ‘Ambassador’ in various public and private settings.
The ED will be passionate about fulfilling Imerman Angels’ mission. S/he will have the character and confidence to work comfortably in a highly visible role and to interact effectively with a broad range of constituents. As a national leader, s/he will bring a genuine passion for the mission of the Imerman Angels coupled with deep experience driving sustainable success.

A Strategic Leader
The ED will be a strategic leader who, with the Board, will set and articulate a vision for the organization. S/he will have the ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability and allocate resources to ensure results. The ED will be an intelligent self-starter and finisher who is resourceful and entrepreneurial, yet team oriented. S/he will understand and implement best nonprofit management practices and planning, including compelling communication messages and effective marketing strategies, and most importantly, ensuring that overall day-to-day operations are aligned with strategic goals. S/he will have an abiding commitment to a team environment centered on accountability, one that is able to establish priorities, goals, and timelines to achieve quantifiable and qualitative outcomes. S/he will understand and implement best nonprofit management practices and planning, ensuring that overall day-to-day operations are aligned with strategic goals. S/he will have a demonstrated understanding and past experience on how to run a financially sound organization. An engaging and supportive leader, s/he will have a track record of motivating and inspiring others to achieve impact through creativity and teamwork and of leveraging individual strengths to meet organizational goals.
An ‘Ambassador’ and Fundraiser for Imerman Angels
The ED will be a high-energy, charismatic leader who will serve as an ‘Ambassador’ for Imerman Angels. An articulate, informed and passionate public speaker, s/he will represent Imerman Angels as a thought leader in the cancer support sector. S/he must be comfortable being in the spotlight throughout the Chicago and cancer community. The ED will have a demonstrated record of implementing fundraising initiatives, including identification, cultivation, and stewardship and working in close partnership with the senior team and Board of Directors to collaboratively achieve fundraising goals. S/he will have a strong data and analysis orientation and a proven ability to use metrics to drive development decisions and achieve strategic objectives. The ED will inspire, broaden and deepen support from donors, including corporate leaders, high-net worth individuals and key stakeholders. The ED must have a solid understanding of how to utilize advertising and public relations for an organization such as Imerman Angels. S/he will be a strong verbal and written communicator capable of leveraging multiple media platforms to advance the organization’s mission and articulate its value proposition to a wide range of constituents.
Ability to Lead Through Change
The ED will help establish a course of action to drive results and grow the organization. S/he will have the ability to offer creative, yet practical, ideas to achieve the strategic direction of Imerman Angels, doing so with a deep understanding and commitment to the history and foundation of the organization. To achieve desired results and support the organization’s strategic objectives, the ED will have the skills to effectively develop, inspire and lead the Imerman Angel’s team. Fundamentally, the ED will be a ‘change agent’ with the ability to successfully lead Imerman Angels through a period of growth and transformation.

S/he will be an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics and values; someone who can be trusted without reservation.
A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
