The International Association of Better Business Bureaus (IABBB) is the network hub for Better Business Bureaus (BBBs) in the US, Canada and Mexico. IABBB’s vision is an ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers trust each other. BBB helps to create a community of trustworthy by setting standards for marketplace trust, accreditation of businesses that share BBB vision and mission, education and training, and celebrating role models.

BBB believes in the power of trust to grow people, businesses and communities, and the BBB Standards for Trust – honesty, transparency, integrity, etc. – form the cornerstone for all the BBB does.

IABBB serves the 100 local Better Business Bureaus with their 160+ offices across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. IABBB oversees core programs such as BBB Accreditation, the BBB Code of Advertising, and BBB.org—the flagship website with nearly 5.8 million Business Profiles—investigations, and consumer education. IABBB and BBB National Programs are separate but related nonprofit organizations that coordinate to fulfill this vision in different ways and were created by the restructuring of the former Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB).

The Opportunity

The Chief Executive Officer role is a unique opportunity for a talented, driven individual to lead a strong organization with tremendous potential and advance it to its next chapter. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will work with the Board to develop a strategic approach to achieving the organization’s goals of growing and scaling the organization while advancing its mission. Guiding a vision-setting and strategic planning process through communicating and engaging with leaders of the 100 member BBBs, for the next phase of IABBB’s growth will be a key aspect of this role.

The CEO provides leadership for all aspects of the IABBB’s operations with a focus on growth and return on investment. This leader will develop and lead a strong and committed team of 45 with 6 direct reports including the Chief Financial Officer, VP and General Counsel, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Development Officer, Chief Communications Officer, and Chief Technology Officer all focused on outcomes that achieve IABBB’s goals. Working closely with the Board, the CEO will develop high-quality business strategies ensuring their alignment with short- and long-term objectives of IABBB. Additionally, this leader will oversee day-to-day administrative management of IABBB and ensure oversight of an annual budget of $13 million.

The CEO will be regarded as a trusted advisor amongst peers. The CEO will consult on Board governance, strategic planning, collaborations, capital development or other strategic needs as identified by local BBB CEOs and local BBB Boards. Establishing long-term partnerships to support IABBB’s strategies will be a priority for the CEO.The CEO also supports strategic BBB functions and provides oversight for BBBs in Canada, Mexico and the US, working with local staff and BBB committees as appropriate. The CEO will be responsible for the development of a strategic vision that capitalizes upon the BBB’s brand identity, with the unique ability to coordinate collaborative initiatives that strengthen the BBB’s cause.

A Strategic and Visionary Leader

The CEO will be an innovative and enthusiastic self-starter who can position IABBB for the future and serve as a strategic change agent. Able to articulate an ambitious vision for the next chapter of IABBB, the CEO will work closely with the Board to ensure the plan’s successful development, implementation and evaluation. The CEO will actively seek out partnerships to help advance IABBB’s mission and strategic priorities. This leader will actively engage a diverse range of constituents for their input and opportunities, and leverage resources. The CEO will be an agile leader, able to work with the team to navigate the multiple priorities of the association as well as recognizing potential barriers, and knowing when to change direction.

A Leader with Business & Management Acumen

The CEO has a track record of fully leveraging programmatic and financial analyses to evaluate opportunities and make deliberate choices, consistently making effective decisions about use of resources. The CEO understands and implements best nonprofit management practices and planning, ensuring that overall day-to-day operations are aligned with strategic goals. The CEO will deploy an innovative approach that addresses key business opportunities for IABBB as the association continues to grow. Constantly scanning and recognizing external trends by leveraging data and insights, the CEO identifies opportunities to strengthen the impact of IABBB. Equipped with an understanding of leading a network, this leader will thrive and excel in a complex environment. An effective “big picture” strategist who attacks new ideas with drive and energy, the CEO will approach achieving impact through teamwork to meet organizational goals.

An Expert in Governance & Board Relations

The CEO will develop and communicate strategies for growing IABBB within the unique marketplace. The CEO will cultivate a strong, open relationship with the Board and work with them to pursue the priorities developed in the strategic plan. The successful candidate understands the importance of a robust partnership with the Board and will ensure fiduciary responsibility and sound financial accountability. The CEO will support and work with a strong Board of Directors, work with committee chairs, and seek Board involvement with strategic direction for local BBB operations. The CEO will also serve as IABBB’s primary ambassador and thought leader, sharing the BBB mission and vision and helping expand IABBB’s role. This leader is energetic, creative, ambitious and experienced in establishing strong working relationships in furtherance of an organization’s mission.

Fully embracing the BBB mission, the CEO will be a bold thinker and will have unwavering commitment to achieve the goals of the organization. The CEO will focus on the future and how to best adapt IABBB in a changing world. The CEO will promote interest and active participation in BBB programs among the membership while building effective relationships with BBB leaders. The CEO will be the bridge between the local BBBs and the system-wide responsibilities of IABBB. The successful candidate will be a leader who treats others with respect.

Leaders can come from a variety of sectors. Executives with federated model experience would be particularly attractive, in addition to leaders with experience in nonprofits, associations and the public or private sector.
