About Give Blck

Give Blck was officially launched in September of 2020 by Christina Lewis, founder and president of All Star Code, Stephanie Ellis-Smith, CEO of philanthropic advisory firm Phīla Engaged Giving, and David Setiadi, CTO @Point of Care to address racial equity in giving by offering a comprehensive database for donors to find and fund Black nonprofits. It began as a simple spreadsheet to respond to people seeking a way to support Black-owned business and Black organizations in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020. Today, Give Blck has grown into a movement that mobilizes positive action for Black lives and advances racial equity in giving.

Give Blck makes it easier for people and companies to connect with and give to over 500 Black-led organizations they are passionate about by building the country’s first searchable, comprehensive database of exclusively Black-led nonprofit organizations.

Funding and investing in Black nonprofit organizations is a critical – yet often forgotten – piece to tackling systemic racism and inequality. Give Blck is designed to address this problem by calling attention to organizations and their leaders who are working on the frontlines of social change. Making it easier for donors to connect with Black organizations is the solution to one of the primary challenges they face when seeking Black nonprofits to support—knowing where to find them.

The Opportunity

Give Blck is seeking an inspiring and visionary leader to serve as its inaugural Chief Executive Officer. This is a unique opportunity for a high-energy, mission-driven leader to make a meaningful intervention during this critical moment of national reckoning. The organization has gained significant attention since its inception in 2020 and is proud to have already developed important partnerships with Charity Navigator, Microsoft, Benevity, and the Ford Foundation. This motivated and ambitious leader will enhance and develop Give Blck’s brand identity, continue expanding partnerships and corporate sponsorships, help develop the Board, seize opportunities for expanding the database, and build impactful relationships with both donors and Black-founded organizations.

As the face and voice of the organization, the Chief Executive Officer must have a deep understanding of and passion for Give Blck’s mission of elevating Black organizations in America. Give Blck is seeking a leader who is able to connect creativity with movement building to effectively communicate funding opportunities, needs, and impact to the organization’s wide range of stakeholders from black businesses, corporations, and philanthropists to nonprofit organizations and activists. This is an exciting opportunity for the inaugural CEO to build a solid, trusted, and credible brand that drives Give Blck’s mission of advancing racial equity in giving and maximizes social impact.

Candidate Profile

This position calls for a dynamic individual with leadership values based on creativity, growth, and agility. The successful Chief Executive Officer will demonstrate a commitment to the values and principles of grassroots change amidst an environment where new media helps discourse evolve and change rapidly.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with:

  • A proven track record of providing leadership and management for a mission-driven organization or program; a genuine commitment to serving and supporting Black-founded and

-led organizations is a plus.

  • Experience in a start-up environment or leading organizational development and growth.
  • Experience with branding, communications, and creative design with experience in building and managing visual brand assets and voice.
  • The ability to lead with influence and inspiration, building collaboration and buy-in toward a common vision from a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Instincts and experience that come from strategic organizing efforts and or political campaigns.
  • A track record of mobilizing large numbers of people into action and building community leadership.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to generate buy-in, solidarity, and support from a broad range of potential partners.
Core Competencies

Passion for the Mission and Vision:

The Chief Executive Officer will have a clear and informed understanding of the complex issues surrounding racial disparities and injustice, as well as Black philanthropic giving. The CEO must be able to translate professional and lived experience into authentic and inspiring leadership necessary to sustain the increased desire to lift up and support Black organizations.

Communications and Branding:  

A creative professional with acute visual and design sensibility, the CEO will have a vision for how to build Give Blck’s brand, one of integrity and trust, across communications channels. Establishing Give Blck’s continued leadership across corporate, philanthropy, and nonprofit sectors will require clear messaging, strong voice, and visual branding.

Collaboration:

This leader will have high emotional intelligence to work creatively and collaboratively with the Board, staff, partners, and listed organizations on both existing and new initiatives. The CEO must be an excellent listener and seek to include all stakeholders, including grantees, board, staff, policy leaders, community leaders, and funders and be able to lead remote teams.

Strategic Leadership and Vision:  

The CEO will translate ideas into action, be willing to take risks, and offer innovative ideas to adapt, strengthen, and diversify partnerships with effective planning and measurable results. This leader will have a clear vision for Give Blck and will understand the importance of an authentic brand to successfully execute on that vision. The CEO will demonstrate the ongoing ability to diagnose critical areas for attention, and implement clear, action-oriented strategies that address opportunities and challenges for Give Blck.

Infrastructure Development and Business Acumen:

The CEO must be comfortable working in a nimble, high-impact, startup organization. To be successful, the CEO must be entrepreneurial and will develop not only external partnerships, but also infrastructure related to staffing and recruitment and the development of policies and procedures. The CEO will utilize strong branding to help build operational capacity, create internal cohesion, and maintain focus on Give Blck’s mission. Moreover, this leader will ensure fiduciary responsibility and accountability and implement best practices in nonprofit and financial management, including leading a team remotely.

Board Relations:

This individual will work as a thought partner and consultatively with the Board regarding the direction of the organization, operating policies, and the mechanisms of support for organizations in Give Blck’s database. This CEO will help Board members build their governance and capacity, including assist in growing the Board.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation for this position will be approximately $200,000. Salary is intentionally designed to be competitive and commensurate with experience.
