The Opportunity:

Urban Teachers is seeking a thoughtful, innovative and experienced leader to fill the role of Executive Director of Recruitment who will lead the organization’s growth strategy to attract top talent to enter Urban Teachers four-year teacher residency program across rapidly growing markets around the country. This position will report to the Chief Operating Officer, and is an ideal opportunity for a creative strategist who is deeply passionate about Urban Teachers’ mission, vision and work. This individual will have the drive and discipline to lead the national recruitment team to develop, test and implement bold and innovative strategies and tactics to advance and grow the organization’s residency program while elevating the brand nationally.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director of Recruitment will be responsible for developing and implementing a data driven National and Regional recruitment strategy with the goal of bringing in high caliber participants to participate in Urban Teachers’ four-year teacher residency program, offered in partnership with Johns Hopkins University. The Executive Director oversees the development, execution, and monitoring of the organization’s overall recruitment strategy, including developing and instituting evaluative and metrics-based reporting tools. This leader will oversee hiring, training, professionally developing and supervising a growing and nationally dispersed recruitment team. With high success in multiple regions in the U.S., Urban Teachers currently operates in Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Dallas/Ft. Worth, with planned expansion across other major cities across the country. As s/he will oversee individuals in each region, perspective on the national landscape and the ability to understand and build strong relationships will be key to success in this role.

The Executive Director of Recruitment will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Marketing, the Executive Directors of each of Urban Teachers’ local offices, and the Director of Admissions and Selection to ensure that annual participant recruitment targets are met. This leader will be responsible for outreach and recruitment, and inform the development of marketing and communication strategies as Urban Teachers’ recruitment ambassador to prospects, students and partner organizations. As a part of this leader’s oversight, s/he will support the work of the Director of Selection and team to ensure that accepted students are cultivated throughout the admissions and selection process and that they excel upon matriculation.

The role is responsible for developing a data driven training and accountability plan for the recruitment team that will include critical metrics, reports, dashboards, and a clearly articulated overall strategy. The Executive Director will develop lead sources while also building and implementing an effective strategy for the overall recruitment cycle from lead to enrolled participant while also ensuring that priority is put on participants that succeed and graduate from Urban Teachers 4-year teacher prep program.

The Executive Director is also responsible for developing and managing the annual participant recruitment budget and forecasting program enrollment estimates throughout the recruitment year. The successful candidate will have experience managing a team with clear targets and have tools at his/her disposal to creatively lead, motivate, and monitor a team of passionate, smart, and dedicated high performers.

This role requires strong communication skills – both internal and external – and leadership and an ability to influence key stakeholders to effectively launch new initiatives while streamlining and refining current practices. S/he will foster a culture of respect, confidence, and results by setting a clearly communicated vision and direction for the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage a geographically dispersed recruitment team of 7 recruitment and selection specialists with additional recruitment support of 3 additional Resident Experience Coordinators based in each of our three sites.
  • Develop, execute, and improve upon recruitment strategies with goal of meeting and/or exceeding annual participant recruitment and enrollment targets;
  • Significantly increase Urban Teachers’ brand recognition and profile through collaborative planning, and coordinated, targeting marketing and outreach;
  • Coordinate training and professional development of entire recruitment team;
  • Partner with outside nonprofits and feeder organizations, including AmeriCorps programs and Teach For America;
  • Develop, monitor, and promote best practices including key performance indicators, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting across recruitment activities;
  • Work with other departments across the organization to ensure that recruitment practice is aligned with mission of the organization and rigors of the Urban Teachers residency program;
  • Present quarterly business reviews to the CEO, CFO, and COO and manage the department budget;
  • Foster an industrious, resourceful, problem-solving culture across the team while ensuring that each individual is executing and being held accountable.
  • Effectively use Salesforce and other technologies to execute on recruitment strategy;
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports;
  • Spend significant time in the field with recruiters and meetings with recruitment pipeline partners.

Core Competencies:

Successful candidates will have some combination of admissions, enrollment, human resources, graduate recruitment or other sales-related experience, and candidates with a background in for-profit, higher education and related spaces are encouraged to apply. An understanding of online and event based recruitment management best practices is preferred; and a Bachelor’s degree is required with a Master’s degree in a related field preferred.

The Executive Director of Recruitment will have a high level of knowledge and demonstrated experience in marketing and recruitment, admissions and related human resources leadership with the proven ability to lead and manage this area for a complex organization. S/he will have managed a significant similar operation with a correspondingly substantial budget and headcount, and will thrive in an environment with open communication and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. S/he will evaluate and advise on the adequacy and soundness of the department’s strategies and initiatives and will be effective in recruitment and outreach, including with millennials and future generations. The Executive Director will analyze and interpret complex challenges as they arise, and will manage and maintain integrated information systems, data reporting, data analysis and trends.

Strategic and Entrepreneurial Leader

The Executive Director of Recruitment possess an entrepreneurial spirit, a measurable track record of strong results, and an outcome-driven, collaborative mindset. A proven strategic thinker with the vision, capacity, and experience to understand and balance a complex array of priorities and needs, the Executive Director of Recruitment will serve as strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and colleagues on recruitment and marketing strategies, and will be an organizational culture carrier in these areas. This individual will oversee planning and development of recruitment initiatives, diagnose and evaluate current practices, build consensus with stakeholders, and implement decisive, clear strategies that anticipate and address challenges with effective, thoughtful solutions.

Change Manager and Operational Experience

The Executive Director of Recruitment will be a proactive and experienced leader with a background in managing significant organizational change, with a thorough, detailed and wide-ranging perspective on the impacts of these changes on the culture and community. S/he will have practical experience in communicating change, including those related to technology or other changes with systems. With Urban Teachers’ financial and personnel needs in mind, s/he will employ a comprehensive approach to forecasting progress and achieving sustainable, well-supported solutions. S/he will be agile in ambiguous situations and capable of providing stability and inspiring confidence when faced with important and quickly-changing circumstances, including through analyzing and evaluating various scenarios from a budgetary perspective.

Persuasive and Influential Communicator

The Executive Director of Recruitment will possess exceptional communication skills, clearly articulating multifaceted issues to the Urban Teachers’ leadership, as well as to the prospects, students, residents, partner organizations, and the community. S/he will have an inspired ability to listen intently, think clearly and respond effectively, empathically and persistently to a variety of challenges, naturally collaborating to develop clear decisions. With confidence and gravitas, the Executive Director of Recruitment will be the organization’s brand ambassador, chief recruiter and talent manager, endeavoring to significantly heighten awareness of Urban Teachers’ brand and presence in the marketplace. S/he will be an effective and compelling public speaker with the capacity to perform in public relations settings, set communications and recruitment marketing strategy and conduct sales, working closely with the Marketing team to develop a strategy across recruitment channels. In addition, s/he will ably negotiate challenges across the organization, communicating clearly and operating with a high degree of transparency and clarity, garnering support for all recruitment and enrollment strategies, including developing the internal structures and systems to support new and innovative programming.

Relationship Builder and Collaborator

Critical to success in this role, the Executive Director of Recruitment will be skilled at building and sustaining excellent relationships across the organization, including with partner institutions, particularly Johns Hopkins, AmeriCorps programs and Teach For America. S/he will be a natural partner with a demonstrated ability to connect, build bridges and command respect, including with staff, residents and students. S/he will work to develop relationships internally and conduct outreach externally for the benefit of Urban Teachers, identifying efficiencies and leveraging opportunities for the benefit of the organization, and will form meaningful partnerships across the country. In close alignment with the organization’s strategic direction and working collaboratively across the organization’s multiple sites, s/he will be consultative, promoting open dialogue and innovation across Urban Teachers, synthesizing divergent views and coalescing the organization around a shared vision.
