Founded on the principle that every person deserves a safe and healthy place to live, HomeStart has been ending and preventing homelessness in Boston for over 20 years. The organization is committed to walking clients through the challenging process of moving from shelters to permanent housing. They do this by helping to secure housing but also by helping clients re-integrate into their communities by providing support services such as financial literacy and life skills training.
HomeStart is also one of the first and one of the largest agencies in Boston that ends homelessness by preventing it in the first place. To date, the organization has prevented over 3,000 families and individuals on the verge of eviction from becoming homeless by using a wide array of innovative approaches. These include emergency mini-grants, court intervention and landlord mediation, among others. With a strongly-held belief that having a home restores a person’s dignity and offers the stability necessary for making other life changes, HomeStart is a powerful advocate for both ending and preventing homelessness in the City of Boston.
HomeStart is currently seeking a strategic and innovative Executive Director (ED) to take the organization to the next level of impact. The new Executive Director will help strengthen the organization and implement a plan for growth. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors to execute and build on the current strategic plan for the organization will be one of the major priorities for this Executive Director.
The Executive Director will oversee all operations of the organization and will work proactively with the Board and development team to fundraise for the organization, identify new partners, and advocate on behalf of the organization among the media and other important constituencies. Internally, the Executive Director will provide leadership to an experienced and talented staff to ensure they are best able to advance the mission of HomeStart. The Executive Director will be expected to manage HomeStart’s resources ($8 million budget) with a strict eye towards operational and budgetary efficiency. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, so a strong track record of success in Board relations and a willingness to actively engage Board members in the work of HomeStart is essential.

Passion for the Mission: The Executive Director will have a demonstrated passion for the mission of HomeStart and a commitment to remaining focused on the goals of the organization. S/he will care deeply about the welfare of underserved populations and will articulate that passionately. S/he will have a deep respect for the history of HomeStart while staying focused on the future opportunities that exist for the organization.
Strategic Leadership and Management: The Executive Director will be a strategic leader who, with the Board, will set and articulate a vision for the organization’s next chapter. S/he will work with stakeholders to implement and continuously improve on the organization’s strategic approach to future growth and increased impact. S/he will have a demonstrated understanding on how to run a financially sound organization and will be an approachable leader who builds a culture of collaboration among the staff and HomeStart’s various constituents.
Fundraising/Development: The Executive Director will have a clear understanding that fundraising is a fundamental aspect of leading the organization and will enthusiastically lead those efforts. S/he will work in close collaboration with the Board and fundraising team to strategically work towards HomeStart’s desired outcomes in this regard and build and maintain relationships on behalf of the organization.
Innovation/Entrepreneurial Mindset: The Executive Director will have a willingness to think creatively about how to achieve goals and an excitement for innovative approaches. S/he will be a thoughtful risk-taker who looks for opportunities to approach things from a different direction but who is focused on outcomes and using metrics to drive decision-making.
Brand Building/Communications: The Executive Director will build on the existing branding and marketing efforts for HomeStart. Working with both existing and new partners, s/he will build strong brand equity and awareness and will continue to establish partnerships and seek opportunities to promote HomeStart. An outwardly facing member of the community, the Executive Director will be an effective communicator of HomeStart’s mission to the public responding when appropriate to matters of public interest and working tirelessly as an ‘Ambassador’, promoting HomeStart throughout the Boston region and beyond.
