About the J.B. and M.K. Pritzker Family Foundation:
Pritzker Family Foundation (“Pritzker”) has a national focus on catalyzing entrepreneurial change that promotes greater equity and fairness in the lives of ordinary people.
Pritzker and its affiliates anticipate continuing to make substantial philanthropic investments in excess of $1 billion over 20 years.
Pritzker’s primary strategic focus to date has been early childhood development; Chicago community healthcare; national women’s health; and upholding and expanding individual civil and human rights. Examples of publicly announced “big bets” include $40 million of targeted grants to promote equal rights under the law and $50 million in support of poverty-fighting early childhood development programs. In addition, Pritzker has engaged in serving the critical need of individuals and families for basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter.
Pritzker’s work takes the following fundamental approach:
- Investing in evidence-based programs and measuring ROI
- Effecting public policy initiatives through demonstrable advocacy
- Pursuing the highest potential opportunities
- Engaging through partnership – recognizing that no one achieves success alone
- Leading – by convening, spotlighting, bringing expertise
The underlying goal of Pritzker is to create effective strategies that are about making change.
Pritzker is operated out of offices in Chicago and is governed by J.B. and M.K. Pritzker.
Pritzker has achieved success in certain areas and is ready for a new chapter and new leadership. The new Executive Director (“ED”) will be responsible for taking Pritzker to the next level and driving a significant increase in the organization’s ability to have impact.
The ED will be responsible for continuing to develop the strategic direction of Pritzker and working alongside J.B. and M.K. Pritzker to execute on their aggressive goals. The organization will operate proactively, often taking the lead in making significant investments based on the strength of opportunities and potential impact. The ED will collaborate closely with and report to J.B. and M.K. Pritzker, but operate the organization in an entrepreneurial fashion.
S/he will develop and lead an approximately 7-person team that will serve Pritzker’s philanthropic goals. The ED will oversee all programmatic and operational functions of Pritzker, setting high standards for effectiveness, efficiency, and excellence. Responsibilities will include hiring an A+ team, developing and implementing new operating procedures and metrics, driving the organization to build stronger relationships with grantees and partner organizations, managing ambitious multi-faceted, multi-year initiatives and overseeing a strong, results-oriented culture.
The successful candidate could come from a variety of backgrounds. S/he will have a track record with success in the following areas:
- Sophisticated, value-added collaboration among stakeholders
- A business-minded approach to management of large scale projects with a focus on tangible, measurable results
- Leadership of highly effective and nimble small-sized teams
- Use of rigorous strategic and operational analytics to support decision making
- A strong understanding of the nonprofit sector
Strategic and Tactical Leadership
Although Pritzker’s fundamental mission has been established, it will take strong leadership to strategically plan and fully actualize them. In addition to putting in place the organizational platform to drive Pritzker’s philanthropic objectives forward, the ED will lead the ongoing refinement of programmatic strategies. S/he must have the ability to develop and implement innovative approaches and take well-calculated risks in support of Pritzker’s mission. S/he must be highly organized, data-driven and able to exercise good judgment along the way.
Pritzker is driven by a desire to make significant impact in areas of great importance to communities across the country. To succeed in the role, the ED will have a strong results orientation and the ability to build a results-driven culture within the organization. S/he will be analytical and objective, with the ability to ask and answer tough questions and push back on assumptions. S/he will be skilled at putting processes in place that support the right level of collaboration and communication between Pritzker and its grantees and between the ED and the Pritzkers. The ED must be adept at using analytics and metrics to assess performance of grantees against agreed upon objectives and make adjustments in approach as necessary.
Collaboration, Partnership Building and Leading Through Influence
The successful candidate will have the ability to inspire trust and confidence with a range of stakeholders. It is critical that the successful candidate have the capacity to establish a strong connection with J.B. and M.K. Pritzker and work in the service of their philanthropic goals. At the same time, s/he will have the ability to build strong working relationships with staff, grantees, partners and a range of other stakeholders. The ability to be flexible, energetic, positive, creative and ambitious will be critical in establishing strong working relationships in furtherance of Pritzker’s mission.
