In the U.S., our program teams build broad support at the regional, state, and national levels to advance clean energy in the power, transportation, and buildings sectors, and to promote climate policy solutions.

For more than 25 years we have supported grantees to help educate business and community leaders, policymakers, and the general public about the health and economic benefits of a clean energy economy. Grantees include business, health, labor, environmental, faith, and consumer groups, as well as policy leaders, military organizations, think tanks, and universities.

The foundation’s headquarters are in San Francisco, CA, with satellite locations in Raleigh, NC, Chicago, IL, and in Las Vegas, NVEnergy Foundation China offices are located in Beijing, China.

About the Opportunity:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, and a key member of the Operations Team, the Director of Talent and Administration will lead and manage the Energy Foundation’s talent, human resources, and administrative functions in its headquarters and four regional offices. At an exciting time in the organization’s evolution, this role will help ensure the Energy Foundation is an exceptional place to work and grow, and strengthen the organization’s workforce, operational infrastructure, and management practices. The Director is expected to stay current with developments and successful practices in human resources and technology, and be comfortable operating at both a strategic and hands-on level.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Talent and Administration will be responsible for the following:

Organizationally

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including human resources and office administration.
  • Serve as an intellectual thought partner to senior staff and identify and recommend opportunities to improve and align operational and programmatic systems to support continuous improvement and alignment with values.
  • Work with the management team and senior staff to strengthen and maintain the management practices of the organization, in particular supporting supervisors and staff in collaborating across functional areas and geographies; enhancing a focus on ownership, learning, service, and accountability; and maintaining a climate that attracts and retains a diverse workforce of high-quality staff.
  • With the management team and external consultants, increase staff cultural competency resulting in increased inclusivity. Align systems to address and embed equity values throughout the organization.
  • Supervise a Human Resources Manager and Receptionist; model and uphold the values of equity and inclusion in hiring, onboarding, and developing staff. Help maintain a climate that attracts and retains diverse and exceptional talent.
  • Contribute to the establishment and execution of the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts.

Talent Recruitment, Development and Retention

  • Oversee the development and implementation of recruitment practices, including recruitment protocols, interviewing guidelines, evaluation methods, and training for hiring managers.
  • Collaborate with operations and program leaders to evaluate and improve onboarding and offboarding practices tailored to individual needs. Lead efforts to onboard new employees.
  • Codify the essential skills and attributes needed to succeed at the Energy Foundation and in each role. Manage the Annual Development Conversation process and related efforts to support professional development and pathways for all staff to continue to learn and grow through their tenure.
  • Develop and implement strategies/curriculum to train supervisors in coaching, mentoring, and developing employees. Support ongoing efforts in the use of real-time feedback and the implementation of 360-degree feedback to support learning and growth.
  • Oversee strong human resources programs and benefits across the employee lifecycle from onboarding to exit, and ensure that policies and management and employee actions are consistent with applicable laws and regulations.
  • With the team, ensure employees receive prompt support in managing their workplace needs, including employee relations, grievances, and legal matters, in coordination with relevant external experts.
  • Working collaboratively, oversee the design, implementation, and testing of all human-capital related technology in order to achieve improvements in systems and processes to support employees.

Operations

  • Working with department staff, manage the daily office operations, negotiate contracts, manage vendor relationships, act as primary liaison with building administration and sub-tenants, develop and oversee office standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Work with operations team to assist in opening, expanding, and supporting remote offices, troubleshoot issue as they arise, serve as a point of contact for remote office administrative issues.

Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of best practices in recruitment, compensation, and talent management; familiarity with employment law, benefits, and compliance.
  • Demonstrated track record of creating positive work cultures with strong relationships with management, peers, and reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop strong relationships across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders.
  • Strong project-management experience and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional integrity and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential employment information with discretion, strong judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and foster a respectful, diverse, and supportive work environment among staff, in particular to receive feedback openly, and to engage with and resolve differences that arise.
  • Experience with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts a plus.
  • Ability to travel, estimated to be 1–3 times a year for 1–3 business days at a time.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 or more years of progressive experience in human resources, workforce development, or organizational development. Master’s degree a plus.
