Candidate Profile:

The Director, Grants Business Development, will lead BSR’s new global grants business development team that initially will comprise up to six colleagues based in North America, Europe, and Asia. The team has three major roles: donor engagement, grants implementation oversight, and grants systems management. The team partners at the strategic and operational level with our area of expertise teams (Climate Change, Inclusive Economy, Human Rights, Sustainability Management and Supply Chain Management) to support them in engagement efforts with donors and partners. In addition, the team partners with BSR’s nearly 25 Collaborative Initiatives to help these groups foster close relationships with donors and other non-corporate partners.

The Director, Grants Business Development role offers great opportunities for building a new, more effective grants business development team that will play a critical role in furthering BSR’s mission. It also offers tremendous opportunities for working globally with governments, private foundations, corporations, and other stakeholders across a wide range of topics, including climate change, inclusive economy, and human rights.

The Opportunity:

Primary responsibilities for the Director, Grants Business Development role include but are not limited to:


The Director will lead a global team based in 4-5 offices and will provide leadership for BSR’s strategy for working with donors and other non-corporate partners.

Donor Engagement

The Director’s main focus will be to pursue business development opportunities with international organizations, national governments, and private foundations, including through representing BSR to external audiences. He or she will be expected to identify, research, and build long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships with such partners to advance BSR’s mission, including priorities in specific areas of expertise. The role requires the successful candidate to pursue opportunities individually as well as in partnership with BSR colleagues who lead organizational areas of expertise, such as Inclusive Economy, Human Rights, Supply Chain Management, Climate Change, and Sustainability Management.

Donor Engagement Support

The Director (and team) will develop robust proposal processes and tools that will enable higher success rates as well as mitigate grants contracting risks.

Grants Implementation Oversight

The Director will play a key role in monitoring the timely execution of BSR’s total grant portfolio, with a view to ensure delivery on time, on budget, and in line with donor requirements.

Grants Implementation

The Director will contribute to BSR’s delivery of consulting services on relevant projects. This will include designing and managing projects, including developing and monitoring budgets pre- and post-award, as well as adding value to project teams managed by BSR’s industry and areas of expertise leads.

Thought Leadership

The Director will keep up with the latest trends in the donor landscape and, in particular, how to foster stronger public-private partnerships. In addition, the Director is expected to contribute to thought leadership in relevant areas of expertise including by writing blogs and articles.


  • Passion for the mission of BSR
  • Master’s degree in development, political science, business, public policy, or other relevant discipline required
  • Significant private sector or development experience (at least 7-10 years) that demonstrates the candidate’s ability to develop and maintain business relationships, generate business opportunities, manage multiple projects under tight deadlines, and deliver for clients and funders
  • Proven track record on successful business development with grant funders, including international organizations, national governments, and private foundations, as well as knowledge of grants contracting
  • Demonstrated expertise on how the private sector can work with grant funders and other stakeholders to find solutions to social and environmental problems
  • Demonstrated expertise in specific BSR areas of expertise and focus areas, such as women’s empowerment, climate change, human rights, anti-corruption, or financial inclusion
  • Proven leadership and management skills, including a demonstrated ability to mentor other team members
  • Strong collaboration skills, including the ability to create results by supporting peers
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
  • Willingness to undertake business travel (~45% time)
  • Language skills: Fluent in English, with an additional major language strongly preferred
  • Capacity to work and thrive in a growing, fast-paced entrepreneurial organization with a collaborative environment
  • High ethical standards and commitment to BSR core values of leadership, respect and integrity
