The Opportunity

Kos Media is seeking a Vice President, People & Culture to oversee our People, Talent, and Organizational Development team. Reporting to the President, the Vice President will lead DEI, recruitment and hiring, onboarding and offboarding, performance management, staff and leadership development, and overall management of organizational culture and morale.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the VP will provide sound strategic advice and support to the President in day-to day management of people operations as well as to other senior leaders across the organization. They will also play an integral role in driving forward new organizational development strategies and refining current systems and processes related to people and culture.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate an alignment to Kos Media’s values and will be excited at the prospect of working creatively to enhance Kos Media’s mission of empowering people and organizations to impact the political process.

Candidate Profile

They will be excited to work across the entire organization on culture building initiatives, leveraging engagement and ideas from all talented and committed team members.

Strategic Leadership & Development

  • Shapes the vision for People and Culture at Daily Kos, driving forward key objectives related to transforming organizational culture, systems, and processes to ensure that they are best in class.
  • Serves on the the senior management team to provide overall leadership, strategic direction, and management to the organization, and support strategic planning and budgeting.
  • Oversees manager development program to systematically develop management skills amongst new and existing managers; regularly coach managers through challenges and opportunities.

People, Culture & HR Expertise  

  • Develops and manages organizational policies that support employees and ensure legal compliance.
  • Oversees performance management, including managing staff evaluations, coaching managers through handling performance challenges, and supporting the organization to have a strong culture of feedback.
  • Oversees compensation structure and process, in coordination with the team managing benefit offerings.
  • Fosters and stewards a culture steeped in the organization’s values.
  • Manages and works in partnership with HR Director.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Leads in DEI best practices and experience building inclusive and engaged workplaces; including cultural awareness and engaging and supporting diverse constituencies.
  • Oversees the organization’s ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion work, including setting strategic direction and goals, developing an equity roadmap, working with a team of consultants and overseeing internal working groups, and deepening staff skills to ensure that we bring a strong equity lens to our internal and external work.
  • Leads with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with an understanding of how to manage up, down, and across an organization.
  • Ensures consultative and inclusive approaches to developing policy and process changes so that staff feel included, understand their roles, and are engaged in decision-making processes.

Talent Acquisition & Recruitment

  • Builds and manages a strategic talent team to support the organization by hiring and developing strong talent, centering equity across the organization, and shaping the organization’s culture.
  • Partner with leadership to proactively evaluate talent gaps and create a hiring plan to achieve hiring goals.
  • Creates best-in-class processes for identifying and sourcing potential talent, interviewing and evaluating talent, and onboarding talent.
  • Oversees recruitment and hiring team to bring in strong and diverse top talent in a high volume recruitment environment.
Desired Skills, Qualities, and Characteristics
  • Will thrive in a fast-paced, growth environment with a proven track record in building and running People programs.
  • 10 years of experience across multiple People functions with at least 5 years in a Senior Leadership role at a high growth SaaS or technology company highly preferred. Start up experience is a bonus.
  • Strong HR functional expertise; knowledgeable on employment law matters, and compliance management and performance management.
  • Specific role experience in Talent Acquisition desired, but not required.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage a direct team as well as indirect stakeholders in support of an organization’s strategy.
  • Possess strong business acumen with the ability to create win-win strategies that advance the development of our teams and the strategic and financial trajectory of the company.
  • Ability to practice calm and sound judgement under pressure and in support of the organization and our people.
  • Excellent relationship and trust building capabilities and a demonstrated track record building, leading, and managing teams; serving as a coach and mentor to staff across a range of areas.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to confidently interact with a diverse staff—at all levels—within a virtual work environment.
  • Proven track record of successfully navigating complex employee relations situations.
  • Direct experience supporting complex workforce footprints – across geographies and worker types.
Compensation & Benefits

Compensation for this position will start at an annual base salary of $175,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Kos Media also offers excellent benefits including full medical, dental, and vision benefits; optional 401(k) with a company match; a generous vacation package; a flexible work environment with the ability to work remotely or from home and a remote worker stipend; and employer-paid parental/family leave.
