About Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Natural history museums have never been more important or relevant. Every day brings more evidence of the inextricable dependence of human beings on the physical and biological systems of our planet.
As one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH), is among the top natural history museums in the world. It maintains, preserves, and interprets an extraordinary collection of 22 million objects, scientific specimens, and cultural artifacts, which serve to broaden our understanding of the museum’s three major focuses: the history of life (the evolution of life’s diversity), the web of life (the interdependent ecology of all life), and the future of life (using our knowledge of earth systems and the dynamics of life to project alternative futures for all species, including ours). CMNH plays a critical role in both the Pittsburgh region and the international scientific community by generating new scientific knowledge, advancing science literacy, and instilling in visitors of all ages a passion for understanding science, nature, and world cultures.
The CMNH Director steps into a museum with an exciting renewal process well underway. Its staff has established a collaborative approach to planning and implementation that honors diversity and the importance of multiple kinds of knowledge for building the world’s most relevant nature museum.
The CMNH Director will use this momentum and success to establish the organization’s future direction and oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of innovative public programs, scientific research, and collections management.
This is an opportunity to build on CMNH’s history while redefining the 21st century nature museum. CMNH’s strategic framework identifies three intersecting value propositions: telling the big stories, becoming the diverse community for which we seek to be relevant, and demonstrating business acumen.
