Connecticut Community Foundation is looking for a collaborative, creative, and strategic leader to direct our programmatic work. The Vice President of Community Impact is a thought partner and key advisor to the President and CEO, is a member of the Foundation’s management team, and leads a program team of six. The Vice President has primary responsibility for advancing the following strategic objectives of the Foundation, in accordance with our strategic direction:
- Acting as a leader in the community by engaging in collaborative efforts, connecting resources across organizations and funders, mobilizing and convening nonprofit and community partners, and supporting and engaging in advocacy;
- Overseeing grantmaking, organizational capacity building, community engagement, and advocacy activities in collaboration with members of the Foundation’s program and management teams;
- Building and sharing knowledge related to the Foundation’s strategic priority areas;
- Directing internal and external evaluations of Foundation programs to ensure work is advancing our mission;
- Mapping local assets, gaps, and strategic opportunities within Waterbury and across the Foundation’s service region;
- Serving as an ambassador and connector to external constituencies, including philanthropy, government, academia, nonprofit and community organizations at the local, regional, and state levels.
The Vice President oversees the Program Department staff and is responsible for data collection, evaluation and strategy development as it relates to the Foundation’s investment of discretionary grant dollars, staff time, and other resources in community work in line with the Foundation’s strategic plan. The Vice President also works closely with the President and CEO and the Management Team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is energized and inspired by our current Strategic Plan and also driven to advocate for new and innovative approaches to increase the Foundation’s impact.
What You Will Do
As Vice President of Community Impact, your core responsibilities will include the following:
Community Engagement & Leadership
- Develop and maintain a knowledge base of current trends and critical issues in the state, in philanthropy, and across the Foundation’s 21-town service area, particularly as they related to promoting and supporting equitable opportunity and outcomes for local residents.
- Promote and engage in community leadership activities by fostering productive relationships with other funders and regional leaders in order to understand community needs, facilitate collaboration and develop strategic partnerships.
- Oversee process improvement for the organization around grantmaking, community leadership, measuring impact and programmatic outcomes.
- Participate with other senior staff in planning the Foundation’s work, which includes annual budgeting for grants and community initiatives.
- Develop a departmental plan to implement and carry out the operational and strategic goals of the Foundation’s strategic plan, applying a racial equity lens and principles of trust-based philanthropy.
- Facilitate and oversee the pursuit of the Foundation’s strategic priorities within the grant, scholarship, and organizational capacity building programs, in close collaboration with president and CEO and the Director of Grants Management.
- Manage and provide oversight for strategic initiatives as determined by the President and CEO and the Board of Trustees.
- Serve as primary staff on several Foundation priority areas, including promoting equitable opportunity and encouraging community engagement.
- Oversee staff support for the Waterbury Hospital Foundation, a supporting organization of the Foundation. Support includes governance, grant making and strategic planning around community investments.
- Supervise, mentor, and cultivate talent among members of the program staff, ensuring their professional development and growth.
- As a member if the Management Team, contribute to the overall direction and management of the Foundation, including strategic planning and reporting.
- Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Administration and Director of Grants Management to develop an annual operating budget for grants distribution.
- Work closely with the Director of Development when appropriate to facilitate donors’ philanthropy and to coordinate community engagement activities involving the Foundation’s donors and other stakeholders
- Work in partnership with the Director of Communications to facilitate the sharing of information about the Foundation’s priorities and work with the goal of improving the visibility of the Foundation.
- Staff trustee-led committees related to grantmaking and community impact.
- Report regularly to the Board of Trustees on key initiatives and strategy.
- Support the president and CEO and other staff in general organizational management and other duties as necessary.

The Knowledge and Skills You’ll Need
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of experience working in a community-focused environment and demonstrated success in a leadership role
- Familiarity with trust-based philanthropy and working with a racial equity lens
- Strong relationship-building skills and an ability to work effectively and authentically across generations, cultures, and diverse constituencies
- Proven experience in nonprofit or philanthropic program development
- Knowledge of nonprofit organization management and financial reporting
- Excellent analytical, conceptual and organizational skills with attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Creativity and flexibility with experience working as part of multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated qualities of integrity and discretion
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, open and collaborative environment and
- A love of Greater Waterbury and the Litchfield Hills and a strong desire to foster an equitable and inclusive community throughout our 21-town region.
