About Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts

The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) mission is to serve as many children as possible with its proven, research-based model that provides children facing adversity with transformative, professionally supported, long-term, 1-to-1 mentoring relationships with caring adult volunteers so that they can thrive. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts (BBBSEM) is the largest BBBS affiliate and the largest mentoring organization in New England. It is among the top 1% of BBBS affiliates nationwide and a recognized leader and innovator. The organization has impacted the lives of thousands of children—their families and their adult mentors—in its 70-year history. It is driven by the estimated 50,000 children who are growing up in under-resourced families and communities in Eastern Massachusetts, and who, without the time and caring attention of adult role models, will have to “beat the odds” to fulfill their potential. The organization currently serves more than 10,000 children (“Littles”), their guardians, and their adult volunteer “Bigs.”

During this unprecedented time of our history, with COVID-19, BBBSEM recognizes the heightened disparities and needs of the communities that we serve. Through our longstanding and proven programs, we are positioned as a credible solution to rebuild and energize communities that are experiencing the greatest needs. Given BBBSEM’s strong balance sheet, the organization is ready to innovate in a variety of areas, especially with technology. This next phase is exciting with the possibility of non-linear growth through smart expansion of current programs, launching new program models, leveraging technology, geographic expansion and innovating operating processes. The Opportunity

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts is seeking to add exceptional purpose driven board members to the organization. This is an exciting opportunity to create impact and join the Board to continue to lead a financially secure, well positioned organization into the next chapter using all that has been learned over the past year (i.e. virtual mentoring) and addressing how the needs of families and communities may have changed. This is an engaged Board focused on the critical activities required to build and grow the organization while enhancing the communities that are served.

BBBSEM has always been a “bridge” for bringing many people, communities, and cultures together. Building upon that, we have a new Agency wide commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and being an anti-racist organization. We are intentionally working towards being the best reflection of the communities we serve at every level of the organization, from the Board to Bigs. We believe that the more diverse we are, the better we will ultimately serve our kids and change their lives for the better, forever.

We fervently believe that every child who needs a mentor deserves one. Youth safety is a number one priority of BBBSEM. We believe that every young person has potential and together we must defend it. Relationships are the foundation of BBBSEM’s work. We create the most impactful relationships when connections between our staff, Bigs, Littles, parents, partners, and supporters are significant and strong.

Every meaningful relationship is built on trust. BBBSEM builds trust through a rigorous commitment to honesty, transparency, respect, and equity. At BBBSEM, we maximize our impact and truly thrive as an organization when perspectives are diverse, our culture is inclusive, and our practices model the equity we want to see in the world. Both on the BBBSEM Board, and in our work, we seek to include all communities, create impact, and make a difference.
