Alaska is a national and international treasure, with towering mountain peaks and glaciers, old-growth forests, pristine tundra, rivers, wetlands and barrier islands. It is home to distinct and abundant fish and wildlife, including vast herds of free-roaming caribou, unparalleled wild salmon runs, and millions of birds that nest in the state before migrating to continents throughout the world. The organization honors and respects the cultures of Alaska Natives whose way of life is deeply connected to the land. AWL’s vision is that Alaska’s long-term economic future and subsistence traditions are inexorably tied to the health and sound stewardship of its natural resources.  Now is a key moment to cement AWL’s efforts on conservation and leverage proactive opportunities. Additionally, AWL is looking to chart new priorities that center environmental justice alongside the need to protect America’s public lands from the harms of climate change.

This is an opportunity to elevate issues of national importance regarding the preservation and conservation of Alaska’s public lands. AWL’s next Executive Director will represent the organization’s position on emerging policy conversations while advocating for key protection efforts that safeguard Alaska’s most treasured places. This leader will partner with other environmental organizations and work with Alaska Native communities to champion Alaska’s public lands and waters on a national stage. Specifically, they will be a central figure in refining and advancing the goals and mission of the organization in its next chapter. Further, they will prioritize diversifying and expanding the League’s donor base, to ensure the resources needed for a strong fiscal future.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Alaska Wilderness League staff, programs, budget, and execution of its mission.
