About ActBlue

ActBlue is a force for radically increasing grassroots political power on the left. We achieve that by building infrastructure and tech to drive long-term structural change. We’re driven by the belief that our democracy works better when more people participate in civic life and when our campaigns and nonprofits are powered by the people they serve. That’s why we’ve built a powerful online fundraising platform for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot, progressive organizations, and nonprofits.

Our tools make it possible for anyone to build a grassroots campaign or movement and give donors an easy and secure way to support their favorite candidates and causes. Every major Democratic campaign counts on ActBlue as their fundraising platform, and millions of donors trust us as the place that makes it easy to give. In 2019 and 2020 so far, over 20,000 campaigns and organizations have used our platform to raise more than $3 billion with an average contribution size of $35. We are looking to position ActBlue to be a long-term resource for the left and to grow to meet the evolving needs of the donor and campaign base we serve.

How ActBlue Works

We are a nonprofit organization and we want as many groups as possible to be able to use our tools to create strong grassroots fundraising programs. Our platform is available to Democratic candidates and committees, progressive organizations, and nonprofits that share our values for no cost besides a competitive processing fee on donations. You can read more about our structure here.

We take care of building fundraising tools and technology so the groups using our platform can focus on engaging and communicating with their supporters.

We also know that a critical part of bringing grassroots fundraising to thousands of campaigns and organizations is helping them learn how to use the tools strategically. We have a dedicated donor support team, and our digital fundraising experts share their knowledge and work with fundraisers by providing trainings, insights, and other support.

Why Tens of Thousands of Campaigns, Organizations, and Nonprofits Trust Us

We work year-round, so even when campaigns end, our innovation continues. Our engineers are constantly A/B testing our contribution forms, creating new features, and staying on top of the latest advances in online security. And millions of donors can give to any group using our platform with a single click because they’ve saved their payment information through our ActBlue Express feature.

The best part? All of our tools and features come standard for any group using our platform, so a local food bank or candidate for school board can benefit from the same fundraising tools used by someone running for president.

The Opportunity

ActBlue is currently seeking members for our Board of Directors (Directors). We are interested in candidates who have the unique set of interests and skills required for advancing our work of increasing grassroots political power on the left. We are seeking candidates who can help us make strategic decisions deeply informed by the experiences of the many communities in our movement. We are especially eager to consider candidates with a record of building grassroots political power in historically under-represented populations and who share our focus on continually adapting to become better movement partners to the campaigns and nonprofits we serve.

The preferred candidates possess the ability and willingness to bring a strategic mindset and approach to their board service and the confidence to contribute and engage with an established but evolving culture.

Board of Directors Profile

ActBlue’s Board of Directors is seeking candidates for several Director roles to expand the current Board’s skill set. The ideal candidates will support ActBlue as we work to increase grassroots political power on the left. ActBlue is seeking Directors with established track records of success working in: Democratic politics or organizing in the progressive movement; successfully scaling or growing an organization; and organizational development of a like-sized or larger organization. Directors will have the opportunity to actively influence and shape the future of ActBlue and successful Directors will possess the following qualities, characteristics, and skills.

Stewardship of the Mission

New board members will bring a demonstrated commitment to grassroots political power on the left. Directors will be driven by the belief that our democracy works better when more people participate in politics and when our campaigns and nonprofits are powered by the people they serve. Directors will be thoughtful and responsible caretakers of the essential political organ that ActBlue has become.

An Ambassador for ActBlue

Directors will bring an interest in establishing and developing strategic external relationships that will benefit ActBlue. They will serve as an advocate and a connector to encourage the development of new opportunities and programs.

Strategic and Visionary Leadership

Directors will demonstrate diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for building consensus for solutions. They’ll bring guidance in developing forward-looking plans and setting new directions for ActBlue’s growth and continual evolution. They will offer expertise to help ActBlue ideate, assess, and prioritize opportunities to build upon its current assets and increase the scope of its impact. They’ll share interest in supporting senior leadership in carving out space for creativity and experimentation with new opportunities.

An Inclusive Leader

Directors will possess a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); experience with social equity (or social justice) movements that inform one’s analysis of power, privilege, oppression; and experience with implementing socially equitable business practices and reforming organizational culture. ActBlue is dedicated to building an inclusive culture and functioning through a racial equity lens, and this person will help to build a better, more equitable ActBlue internally and to help us evolve into better partners for the campaigns, orgs, nonprofits, and donors we serve.
