Koya partnered with the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation on their search for a Program Director for the Northern Virginia region. Following a comprehensive search led by Melissa Madzel, the Meyer Foundation leadership appointed Sonia Quiñónez.
Sonia has dedicated nearly three decades to working in community-based nonprofit organizations that seek social justice, empower families, build resiliency in youth and cultivate partnerships across sectors to advocate for systems change. Having excelled in increasingly complex leadership, fundraising and management roles, Sonia has designed, implemented and evaluated initiatives that seek solutions to community challenges by working in partnership with families in poverty, immigrant families, families of children with disabilities and families struggling with trauma.
A passionate advocate for systems work to address entrenched challenges that maintain inequities, poverty and multi-generational struggles, Sonia has cultivated collaborative relationships with nonprofit and public-sector leaders working throughout Northern Virginia. She believes in the power of weaving together data analysis, articulation of community values and stories to mobilize community change.
At the Meyer Foundation, Sonia will work to develop a grant portfolio focusing on the Foundation’s goals to stimulate systems change in housing, education, employment and asset building to advance racial equity, while also engaging in opportunities to expand the Foundation’s advocacy, capacity-building, convening and collective action work in Northern Virginia.
Previously, Sonia served as the executive director at SCAN of Northern Virginia from 2010 to 2018, where she more than doubled the organization’s budget, strengthened outcome-driven programming and significantly expanded the organization’s partnerships and geographic reach across Northern Virginia. During that time, she also served on the Board of Directors of the statewide Families Forward organization, the Northern Virginia Child Fatality Review Team and as a member of Leadership Arlington (Class of 2002) and Leadership Alexandria (Class of 2010).
Sonia has a master’s in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University, with a concentration in administration and planning. She and her husband live in Arlington, Virginia, where they raised two children.
