Koya partnered with Women Moving Millions on their search for an Executive Director. Following a comprehensive search led by Molly Brennan, the Women Moving Millions Board of Directors appointed Sarah Haacke Byrd.
Sarah most recently served as Managing Director of Mariska Hargitay’s Joyful Heart Foundation with a mission to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. Sarah brings to Women Moving Millions extensive experience in financial and operational management, strategy, fundraising, external affairs, and program. She shares a deep personal commitment to the space and has been described as a “joyful warrior” going to battle for women and girls every day.
During her tenure at Joyful Heart, Sarah was instrumental in guiding strategy and building out the organization’s primary programmatic focus: the campaign to eliminate the national backlog of unprocessed rape kits. Working with a national community of survivors, advocates, elected officials, law enforcement, and major funders, the campaign uncovered hundreds of thousands of untested kits and drove $169M in new funding to support local reform efforts, and passed 35 laws in 26 states.
Sarah’s career started in fundraising and leadership, including serving as Director of Leadership Development at the Anti-Defamation League and as Director at Facing History and Ourselves. She then moved into the lead operating role at Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture. She joined Joyful Heart as Managing Director in 2014.
She earned her M.S. in Positive Organizational Development from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management and her B.A. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
