Koya consultants partnered with the Committee at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on their search for a founding Director of the AAAS Center for Scientific Evidence in Public Issues (EPI Center).
Science policy and public affairs expert Michael Fernandez was selected as the founding director of the AAAS Center for Scientific Evidence in Public Issues following an international search that caught the interest of science policy experts from all corners.
Michael joined AAAS from George Washington University, where he was most recently a senior fellow in its Food Policy Institute and Sustainability Collaborative and a lecturer in the Milken Institute of Public Health.
Prior to George Washington, he was senior director of global public policy at Mars, Inc., and executive director at the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology. He also has experience working in federal agencies as past associate administrator of the Agricultural Marketing Service of the Department of Agriculture and as special assistant in the Pesticides, Prevention and Toxic Substances division of the Environmental Protection Agency.
He first became involved in science policy as a AAAS S&T Policy Fellow with the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. He served on that committee’s professional staff for three years and went on to work as associate administrator of the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and as special assistant in the Pesticides, Prevention, and Toxic Substances Division of EPA.
He has a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Chicago.
