Koya’s Tom Phillips and Charlotte Harris partnered with Allegheny College on the recruitment of Bill Ross as Director of Athletics and Recreation.
Ross had previously served as the Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation since July 2018. Prior to that, he spent eight years as the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities and Recreation Services and 14 years as the head coach of Allegheny’s cross country and track & field teams.
Since assuming the role of Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation, Ross has overseen all aspects of Allegheny’s 23 varsity athletic programs, which includes the addition of two new sports. With field hockey and men’s lacrosse beginning competition during the 2019–20 academic year, Ross has played a pivotal role in introducing those sports and the capital improvements that have come with it. Part of that is an additional artificial turf field, which will primarily house the field hockey and women’s lacrosse programs and feature a blue playing surface, and two new grass soccer fields. The athletic training and locker room facilities at the Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex have also received improvements to accommodate the new programs as well as reinforce the College’s commitment to the other programs that utilize the space. Additional capital campaigns are underway to fund improvements to the Robertson Baseball Field, as well as create a varsity weight room in the David V. Wise Center.
On February 1, 2019, a plan Ross helped bring to life came to fruition when Allegheny announced the renaming of the performance arena at the Wise Center after Mullen. The James H. Mullen, Jr. Arena, colloquially known as “Jim’s Gym,” was unveiled in front of a capacity crowd moments before the Gator men’s basketball team defeated No. 14 Wabash, 80-68, in the first game under the new name.
Ross has also chaired three successful searches for head coaches and administrators, announcing Max Niggel as the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Coach in September, Sean King as Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Media Relations in November and, most recently, Rich Nagy as Head Football Coach earlier this month.
As Director of Athletics and Recreation, Ross serves on Allegheny’s Administrative Executive Committee (AEC), the College’s senior leadership team. He is responsible for managing 45 full- and part-time and volunteer staff members, as well as the department’s operating budgets and all aspects of the Golden Gator Golf Outing.
Ross is currently the co-chair of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Sports Caucus and has been a member of numerous committees both within the NCAA and Allegheny. Ross holds memberships in the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA), the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA), the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
He and wife Wendy reside in Meadville and are the parents of sons Tim, Zac, Nat, Tyler, and Noah.
